EVANSVILLE, Ind. -- The IUPUI women's basketball team could not hold on to a 13-point first half lead, falling to Evansville, 59-53, Sunday afternoon at Roberts Stadium.
IUPUI (3-5) was able to open up a 13-point advantage in the first half, but Evansville whittled it away at the free throw line. In the opening 20 minutes, when the Purple Aces shot 20.7 percent from the field, they hit 15-of-18 free throws to stay in the game.
Senior Christina Cunningham posted her first career double-double in the loss, finishing with 12 points and 11 rebounds.
Evansville (4-3) did not need free throws to take their first lead of the game 2:12 into the second half, opening the half with a 7-2 run. Junior Jernisha Cann picked up her fourth foul of the game just 42 seconds into the half, taking away one of the Jaguars best offensive and defensive options.
A transition jumper by Amy Gallagher gave the Purple Aces a 36-34 lead, forcing IUPUI into an early timeout.
The Jaguars had contained Evansville's leading scorer, Rebekah Parker, throughout the game, holding her to four points until she hit a three with 41 seconds to play, extending the Purple Ace lead to 58-53. A five-second call against IUPUI on the ensuing possession sealed the game.
Despite losing their lead, the Jags kept coming back, with Cunningham knocking down a three in the corner shortly after missing what would have been a go-ahead layup to put the Jaguars back ahead, 48-46, with 6:00 remaining.
Evansville answered a minute later when Courtney Felke knocked down a three from with wing to put UE up, 49-48. The Jaguars came back on a layup by Cann with three seconds on the shot clock to regain the lead.
Cann's layup accounted for her final points in the game, as she fouled out with 3:17 remaining going for a rebound with the Jaguars behind, 49-50.
The contest ground to a halt midway through the half, with Evansville converting the game's only basket over a 6:13 stretch, enabling them to build a 42-39 lead with 9:43 to play.
The Jaguars came out of the gate fired up, scoring the first six points of the game on their way to opening an 11-2 lead. An offensive rebound and putback by Cann just beat the shot clock to push the IUPUI advantage back to seven.
Senior Amy Cook had all 10 of her points in the opening 9:48 of the game, fueling the IUPUI attack. The Jaguars kept pushing the pace of play, getting a traditional three-point play from Cunningham and a three by Cook in transition to take a 27-14 lead, forcing an Evansville timeout.
The Jaguars began settling for jumpers midway through the half, allowing Evansville to stick around, as the teams combined for five points between the 12-minute and 8-minute media timeouts.
Still, the IUPUI defense limited Evansville's opportunities from the field, as the Purple Aces were only able to shoot 2-for-11 from three-point range and 6-for-29 in the opening half.
IUPUI shot 14-for-28 in the first 20 minutes, continually getting good looks despite foul trouble, which saw Cann and sophomore Julia Whitted sitting out the final 4:20 of the opening half with three fouls apiece. At the half, the Jaguars led by three, 32-29.
IUPUI will return to the friendly confines of The Jungle on Wednesday, December 5 when they will host Cleveland State. The game will begin at 7 p.m. and can be seen on IUPUIJags.com.
