OXFORD, Ohio -- The IUPUI women's basketball team could not overcome a long-range assault from Miami University in their final game of the Preseason WNIT, falling, 73-59, Saturday at Millett Hall on the campus of Miami University.
IUPUI (1-3) held Miami to 13-of-30 shooting from inside the three-point line, but the RedHawks hit 11-of-17 long-range bombs to keep the Jaguars at bay throughout the second half.
Senior Christina Cunningham had a career night in the Buckeye State, finishing with 26 points. Cunningham entered the Jaguar record books by going 14-for-15 from the free-throw line, becoming the first IUPUI women's player since Tiffany Kyser in 2003 to knock down 14 shots from the charity stripe.
Cunningham was perfect from the line until 20 seconds remained in the game, when she hit 1-of-2 shots, and her 26 points were the most by a Jaguar since Kia Hayes put up 29 against Evansville on Dec. 4, 2005.
The Jaguars rallied from as much as a 16-point deficit to cut the Redhawk lead to 5, but Miami responded with two key three-pointers to keep IUPUI at bay. Following a three in the corner by freshman Nicole James cut the lead to 44-39, Miami answered with a transition layup to widen the lead.
IUPUI came back with slashing layups by freshman Brittany Ransom, but Miami knocked down three-pointers on each subsequent possession, pushing their lead back to nine.
Following two Cunningham free throws, another three by Ashley Hawkins gave the RedHawks a 55-44 lead with 10:28 left in the game. Two more three-pointers helped push the Miami advantage to 16 at the 5:14 mark, forcing a Jaguar timeout.
Coming out of the break, IUPUI used a pressure defense to cut their deficit to single-digits. After missing on three straight shots that would have cut the Miami lead to 8, Cunningham stepped into the passing lane to come away with a clean steal and layup to bring IUPUI within 44-36 with 13:54 to play.
The Jaguars were not able to counter the momentum gained by Miami after the 8-minute media timeout. The RedHawks continued their barrage from behind the three-point arc, knocking down six long balls in the opening 20 minutes to take a 39-28 halftime lead.
Cunningham had nearly half of the Jaguars' points at the break, scoring 13 points to break her old career-high of 7 with 3:09 to play.
In the previous night's win, IUPUI was able to knock down some early jumpers and find their rhythm. And while the Jaguars were not able to get their offense going in the first few minutes of tonight's game, their defense kept them in the game.
IUPUI went the first 6:43 without a field goal before Whitted knocked down a layup to stop the drought. The bucket seemed to propel the Jags, as they used a 7-0 run midway through the half to take a 13-10 lead despite hitting just 5-of-22 field goals overall.
Both Cunningham and senior Ashley Conner played key roles as the Jags overcame their slow start. Conner's three-point play gave the Jags their first lead of the game at 13-10, while Cunningham had back-to-back buckets to fuel the run.
IUPUI shot 8-for-15 over the last 11:29 of the half; however, Miami shot 10-for-18 over the same stretch, including hitting 6-of-8 three-point attempts.
The Jaguar defense kept the RedHawks from hitting a field goal over a 5:34 during the run before Miami took the next seven points to move ahead for good, 17-13.
This was the first of two meeting between the schools, as the Jaguars will return to Millett Hall on Saturday, December 19 for a contest with the RedHawks.
IUPUI will continue their road excursions by venturing to the Carolinas over Thanksgiving. The Jags will take on the University of South Carolina-Upstate on Wednesday, November 21, from the G.B. Hodge Center in Spartanburg, S.C. The contest will begin at 7 p.m. IUPUI will then head north to battle Gardner-Webb University on Saturday, Nov. 24 at 2 p.m. from the Paul Porter Arena in Boiling Springs, N.C.
