OXFORD, Ohio -- Powered by a 61.9 percent shooting second half and sophomore Julia Whitted's career night, the IUPUI women's basketball team picked up their first win of the 2007-08 season, defeating the Thundering Herd of Marshall, 60-49, Friday night in the consolation round of the Preseason WNIT at Millett Hall on the campus of Miami University.
Whitted had 18 points on 8-for-14 shooting, as well as 11 rebounds, all of which set new career highs. The Staunton, Ind.-native's 5 blocks matched her career best, equaled on Wednesday versus Morehead State.
IUPUI (1-2) put forth their best effort of the season, knocking down 13-of-21 shots in the second half and 22-of-48 for the game, getting key contributions from all eight players who appeared in the game. Both freshmen Nicole James and Brittany Ransom played crucial minutes down the stretch as the Jaguars were able to pull away for the win.
Whitted took over down the stretch, hitting four of the Jaguars' last five field goals. With 2:40 to play, the 6-foot-5 center dug out a loose ball and layed the ball in to put the Jags ahead, 54-47 and seal the win.
From there, IUPUI hit 6-of-8 free throws down the stretch to put away the game.
The Jaguars played with Whitted and junior Jernisha Cann in foul trouble throughout the second half. Whitted picked up her third foul with 17:03 to play while Cann picked up her fifth with 5:23 remaining in the contest.
Still, the Jags persevered. Leading 47-45, James knocked down a jumper from the free-throw line while being fouled. Her three-point play pushed the lead back to five points with 4:11 to play.
Despite Whitted's foul trouble, IUPUI was able to go small and find seams in the Marshall defense to create points. James had six of the Jaguars's seven points over a two-minute stretch to help the Jaguars to a 36-33 lead.
When Whitted appeared off the bench to corrall Ransom's errant shot and put it back up and in, the Jags pushed their lead to 38-33, forcing a Marshall timeout.
In the chilly Millett Hall, the Jaguars came out hot in the second half, knocking down four of their first six shots and 10 of their first 15 as they were able to assume control of the game. Whitted knocked down a turnaround jumper to give IUPUI a 25-23 lead two minutes into the second half, but picked up her second and third fouls within the next 1:04, forcing the Jaguars to play small while she was on the bench. Still, Tate hit her second shot clock-beating jumper to put the Jags back ahead, 29-27 with 16:31 to play.
Whitted was a key in the Jaguars's strong start without scoring a point. Her inside presence forced Marshall to double team, leaving Cann and Tate open for outside jumpers.
The Jaguars started 4-for-11 from the field, hitting all four field goals in a three-minute span. However, Marshall used a 6-0 run to pull in front, 10-8. IUPUI was able to stay in the game with strong defense, with Cann and Whitted combining for pull down nine of the team's first 11 boards.
While the Jags were able to hold the explosive Thundering Herd offense in check, they struggled to consistently find an offensive rhythm. Ransom knocked down her first collegiate bucket, a three-pointer, to tie the game at 15 with 9:20 remaining in the half, but the Jaguars went almost six minutes without another field goal, falling behind 21-15 in the process.
However, the Jaguars rallied with five straight points to force a Marshall timeout after Tate connected on a three-pointer to beat the shot clock and Ransom slashed to the basket for a layup, cutting the deficit to a single point with 2:52 to go in the half.
Marshall outrebounded IUPUI 24-15 in the half, but the Jaguars were able to hold the Thundering Herd at bay with six blocks, five coming from Whitted as she equaled her career high in the first half of play.
Cann finished the game with 6 points and 8 rebounds in 30 minutes.
IUPUI will wrap up the consolation round of the WNIT tomorrow, when they take on Miami-Ohio from Millett Hall on the campus of Miami University in Oxford, Ohio. The game will begin at 8:30 p.m..
