SLOW STARTS PLAGUE JAGUARS IN 56-54 LOSS TO MOREHEAD STATE

11/14/2007 11:04:18 AM

INDIANAPOLIS -- Slow starts to the first and second halves were too much for the IUPUI women's basketball team to overcome, as the Jaguars fell to Morehead State, 56-54, Wednesday night at The Jungle.

IUPUI (0-2) was able to tie the game on a steal and layup by freshman Nicole James with 19 seconds remaining, but a jumper by Anith Smith-Williams with 3.4 seconds left sealed the game.

Junior Jernisha Cann posted her first double-double of the season with a game-high 19 points and 11 rebounds, but her three-point attempt was right of the rim as time expired.

The Jaguars started slow in both halves, falling behind by 11 points in each half before rallying. In the second half, the Jags used a pressure defense to force 12 Morehead State turnovers, leading to 12 points.

Still, 9-for-30 shooting kept the Jaguars from completing their comeback, as they could not convert three opportunities down the stretch that would have tied the game prior to James's steal and layup.

Following the layup, Morehead State (1-1) gave the ball to Smith-Williams on the right wing. Her drive took her to the key, where she elevated and hit the game-winning jumper.

After two timeouts, IUPUI got the ball to Cann at midcourt, where her attempt failed.

The Jaguars found themselves down 11 points 7:30 into what was an all-around sloppy first half in which the teams combined for 25 turnovers.

A jumper by Cann and layups from senior Christina Cunningham and junior Brykeesha Tate brought the Jags within five points, but Morehead State was able to hold off the Jaguar attack by balancing out their scoring.

At the half, the Eagles led, 29-24, with nine players tallying points.

Sophomore Julia Whitted continued her strong early-season play with 10 points and 6 rebounds in a career high 24 minutes. James also had the best game of her two-game career with 6 points on 3-for-7 shooting and 4 steals.

IUPUI will head to the consolation rounds of the WNIT this weekend when the Jaguars take on Marshall University from the campus of Miami-Ohio in Oxford, Ohio. The game will begin at approximately 8:30 p.m. The Jaguars will face off against either Radford or Miami-Ohio on Sunday depending on the outcome of their previous game.
