INDIANAPOLIS -- Despite falling to Western Illinois, 3-0, Saturday night at The Jungle, the IUPUI women's volleyball team helped raise over $2,000 for the Susan G. Komen Foundation through the Dig for the Cure.
Raising money through donations and via pledges per dig, the Jaguars tallied 50 digs on their end to raise the funds.
IUPUI (10-14, 3-7 Summit) could not muster the momentum that allowed them to come from behind in Friday night's win, dropping three straight to Western Illinois, 22-30, 35-37, 18-30.
Senior Devika Bellamy led the way with 16 kills.
The Jaguars came out of the gates sluggish, falling behind the Westerwinds 2-7 before taking a timeout. Depsite trailing by 10 at 5-15, IUPUI rallied to within 18-23, causing Western Illinois to burn a timeout.
However, Western Illinois (10-13, 7-3 Summit) came out of the break by taking the next three points to effectively put the game away.
IUPUI came into game two determined to even the match, but fell in their longest game of the season.
The Jaguars took an early 10-7 lead, but Western Illinois eventually pulled ahead, 21-18 to seemingly take control of the game. However, IUPUI took five of the next seven points to tie the game at 23.
From there, neither team would lead by more than a point until the end of the game, with the Jaguars having three game points and surviving four game points until reaching 35-36, when the Westerwinds capitalized on a kill to take the game and momentum.
Entering game three, IUPUI appeared to be out of gas, battling Western Illinois to 7-7 before WIU used a 5-1 run to pull away. Following a timeout, the Westerwids continued their roll, going on a 9-3 run to increase their lead to 21-11.
The teams traded points from there, with Western Illinois winning the game, 30-18.
The Jaguars will look to rebound during a crucial road trip to the Dakotas next Friday and Saturday. IUPUI will take on South Dakota State on Friday, October 26, with action beginning at 7 p.m. CST from Frost Arena.
