FARGO, ND - Playing its first road match of the season on a crisp fall day, the IUPUI women's soccer team lost to future Mid-Continent Conference member North Dakota State, 3-1. Sophomore Emily Hicks scored her second career goal in defeat.

North Dakota State (3-1-0) applied pressure from the start, outshooting the Jags 12-5 in the first half and 24-11 for the game. IUPUI had the first golden opportunity of the match when Hicks hit a crossbar just under six minutes in before NDSU stole the tempo.

Chelsea Body cracked the scoring column in the tenth minute when she took a pass from Kelsey Hohol and beat IUPUI senior goalkeeper Jessie Mann from just inside the 18-yard box for her first score of the season.

The hosts added some insurance early in the second half when Jami Rozell scored an untraditional goal. Rozell lofted a shot on net from near midfield that gained steam from a stiff tailwind. The ball bounded in front of Mann, then over the 5-foot-5 keeper's head for a 2-0 advantage.

Hicks continued to apply pressure for IUPUI (2-2-1), scoring an unassisted goal in the 67th minute to shave the lead in half. Hicks put a shot on goal that Monica Morgan saved, but was able to settle the rebound and beat two defenders for her first tally of the year.

NDSU's Patty Romeo capped the scoring in the 73rd minute, off an assist from Ashley Chandler.

"The game was kind of lost in the midfield," IUPUI head coach Chris Johnson said. "We didn't contain them as well as we needed to.

"In the second half, they had the wind at their backs and were able to use that to their advantage."

Michelle Martinez paced the NDSU attack with seven shots, while Hicks fired six for the Jags. IUPUI put just three shots on goal, forcing Morgan to make just two saves in the win.

"Emily (Hicks) played her best game ever in an IUPUI uniform," IUPUI head coach Johnson said. "She hustled all game long and was really our only offense in the first half.

"She really proved that she can play today."

Mann made a season-high eight saves in the loss.

Offensively, IUPUI was without forward Mia Moody, who missed her second straight match.

"We didn't execute inside the 18's as well as we should have," Johnson said. "Literally, we would get the ball inside the 18 and not get a shot off. Then they would bring the ball down the field, get inside the 18 and put a shot on net."

The contest marked day one of the North Dakota State Bison Invitational, which will conclude on Sunday morning. The Jags are slated to face another future Mid-Con member, South Dakota State, at 11:00 a.m..
