MUNCIE, Ind. — The IU Indianapolis women's soccer team fell on the road at Ball St. with a final score of 2-0 on Thursday (Aug. 13) at the Briner Sports Complex. The match, which was rescheduled from the day prior due to inclement weather, represented the season opener for both squads.
IU Indy recorded six shots, with two on goal, while the goalkeeper duo of
Sofia Rodriguez and
Isabel Oferosky combined on five saves.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The first half began with Ball St. taking an early lead, as Kaelyn Valleau scored with an assist from Jordyn Klaasen at in the third minute. The Jags responded with offensive attempts, notably a corner kick from
Annaliese Black in the fifth minute, but were unable to equalize. Rodriguez made crucial saves for IU Indy, including stopping a bottom-center shot by Annika Klauss in the 29th minute, maintaining the 1-0 score in favor of Ball St. as the period concluded.
Ball St. extended its lead with a goal by Anna Kate Robillard in the 54th minute as she volleyed an IU Indy clearance past Oferosky. Despite several attempts to shift the momentum, including shots by
Madeline Chappa and
Anika Guenther, the Jags were unable to find the back of the net. Oferosky made crucial saves to prevent further damage, standing tall behind a steady rotation of defensive backs.
NUMBERS
Ball State finished with a 13-6 shot advantage and 10-2 margin in corner kicks, including 7-0 differential in the second half.
QUOTABLE
"We were able to withstand pressure during the run of play. No, we weren't broken down throughout the game. We just fell asleep on a couple of corners that led to goals," head coach Angela Berry White said. "Those are fixable mistakes. We'll learn from them, hopefully get something going in our next game going forward."
