ELMHUSRT, Ill. - IUPUI senior swingman Brandon Cole and sophomore guard George Hill were named First Team All Mid-Continent Conference today. The Jaguars, who shared the regular season title with Oral Roberts, also reeled in two of the league's major honors as head coach Ron Hunter was picked Coach of the Year and senior Maushae Byles was voted the league's Sixth Man of the Year.
Hunter was named the Coach of the Year for the second time in his career after leading IUPUI to a share of the program's first-ever league title. The Jaguars finished with a school-record 13 Mid-Con wins and posted a nine-game winning streak during the conference season. His team was the best defensive squad in the Mid-Con, allowing just 67.2 points per game and holding 10 opponents under 60 points this season.
Byles got off to a sluggish start to the year due to injury problems, but hit his stride early during the league schedule. The 6-foot-5 swingman averaged 8.5 points and 3.1 rebounds per game against Mid-Con opponents, while hitting better than 51 percent from the floor and 46 percent from three-point range in 13 contests. He scored a season-high 23 points in the Jags' win over Oakland on Feb. 4 and had 20 points and five rebounds in a pivotal win over Oral Roberts on Feb. 11. He is the first IUPUI player in school history to win the Sixth Man honor.
Cole capped his four-year IUPUI career by averaging 15.4 points and 7.2 rebounds per game, while also knocking down 39 percent from three-point range. He ranked second in the Mid-Con by draining nearly three threes per game and led the league in defensive rebounds per game (5.41 rpg). Over the course of his senior season, Cole ascended to IUPUI's all-time leader in three-pointers made, No. 3 on the career rebounding list and No. 9 on the school's scoring list. His clutch shooting helped the Jags to come-from-behind wins at Oakland and at UMKC during the conference season.
Hill was nothing short of brilliant in his second year in an IUPUI uniform, averaging a team-high 18.9 points per game to accompany his 5.7 rebounds and 3.6 assists a night. He had a league-best 16 20+ scoring nights and upped his scoring average to 20.4 points per game against Mid-Con opponents. He hit 52.5 percent from the field and 81.7 percent from the free throw line. He ranked among the Mid-Con's Top 10 in eight different statistical categories including scoring, rebounding, assists, steals (1.74 spg), assist-to-turnover ratio (1.27), field goal shooting and free throw shooting. Hill was the lone sophomore on the First Team.
Hill and Cole became IUPUI's first-ever First Team duo. A full rundown of the league's award winners are below.
