INDIANAPOLIS — The IU Indy volleyball team defeated Ohio 3-0 on Thursday, taking the sets 26-24, 25-21, 25-22. The Jaguars hit .329 with 42 kills and nine service aces, to secure the sweep.
In the opening set, Ohio came back late to tie it up at 24-24. The Jags then closed with a
Jillian Tippmann kill from
Grace Purichia and a
Laura Roeder service ace to win 26-24.
The Jags turned a 15-15 second set into control with four straight points on
Ninah Miranda's serve, getting two kills from
Bailey Sinish and two from
Amanda Stephens to move ahead 19-15. After Ohio got back within 20-19, the Jags answered with a
Bailey Sinish kill and a Purichia service ace, then closed the set 25-21.
Facing Ohio's late 19-17 lead in the third set, the Jags won five of the next six rallies, getting kills from Sinish, Stephens and
Kate White around a
Lexi Grissett service ace to move in front 23-20. The Jags closed the set on consecutive Ohio errors for a 25-22 finish.
Tippmann led the Jags with 13 kills, hitting .364 and adding two service aces. Sinish recorded 11 kills on a .400 hitting percentage and added five digs. Purichia finished with 30 assists, three kills, three digs and a service ace. Roeder tallied four service aces and nine digs while adding three assists.
After the Jags' win over Ohio, Sinish credited the opponent and the team effort behind the result: "I mean Ohio is such a great team." She added, "It was really fun to go out there," and pointed to the support around her, saying, "I had Grace setting me great balls and my middles were pulling all their blockers, so it was a great team win."
The Jags will continue the Hampton Inn Invitational tomorrow, Sept. 4 when they host Marshall on at 6:00 PM in The Jungle.
