SEATTLE — The IU Indy Jags (1-2) fell to the University of Washington (3-0) in a closely contested five-set match, 2-3, at Alaska Airlines Arena on Sunday. The Jaguars rallied to win the second and fourth sets, but Washington secured the victory with a 15-9 final set.
The first set commenced with the Jaguars on serve, but they quickly found themselves trailing as Washington capitalized on early service errors and a service ace to take a 2-0 lead.
Ninah Miranda responded with a kill assisted by
Jillian Tippmann, narrowing the deficit to 2-1. Despite some strong offensive efforts, including a service ace by
Lexi Grissett and multiple successful attacks by Miranda, the Jags struggled to close the gap as Washington maintained control through effective kills and service aces. The Huskies took set one, 25-16.
IU Indy rallied after a slow start in the second set, overcoming an early 0-5 deficit against Washington. The turning point came with
Lila Britt's kill, assisted by
Grace Purichia, that initiated a comeback, bringing the score to 1-5. Purichia played a pivotal role with multiple assists, including a key kill by Tippmann, leveling the score at 10-10.
As the set progressed, the Jags capitalized on Washington's errors and maintained pressure with strong defensive plays, such as Stephens and Sinish's block that led to a 20-18 lead. Despite a tense exchange of points in the closing moments, IU Indy secured the set with a final block by Tippmann that resulted in a 25-23 victory, tying the overall match score.
IU Indy took an early lead in the third set with a kill by Tippmann, assisted by
Laura Roeder, to start the scoring but Washington responded effectively, maintaining a slight edge.
As the set progressed, IU Indy managed to add points with kills from Tippmann and Britt, but a final attack error concluded the set. Washington clinched the third set with a 25-12 score.
IU Indy demonstrated resilience in the fourth set when Tippmann delivered a service ace, leveling the score at 12-12, followed by a kill to take a 13-12 lead. Purichia played a crucial role, facilitating multiple kills, including one by Stephens that edged IU Indy ahead 14-13. The set concluded with IU Indy capitalizing on an attack error by Addie Kanouff, closing the set at 25-22.
IU Indy found themselves in a challenging fifth set as Washington's early blocks and kills set the tone. Stephens delivered a key kill from Purichia to initially level the score at 2-2, but Washington quickly regained momentum, advancing to a 6-2 lead. Despite service errors from both sides offering brief reprieves, Washington maintained their lead, ultimately closing the set 15-9. This decisive set concluded the match with a final score of 3-2 in favor of Washington.
Grace Purichia orchestrated the offense with 38 assists and contributed 13 digs. Tippmann led the scoring effort with 12 kills and added three total blocks. Stephens posted a .353 hitting percentage, finishing with eight kills on 17 attempts. Sinish contributed defensively with nine digs and also tallied nine kills.
The Jags will now return to Indianapolis for the annual Hampton Inn Invitational. They open the weekend with their home opener against Ohio on Thursday, Sept. 3 at 7:00 p.m. inside the Jungle.
