FORT WAYNE, Ind. - The IU Indianapolis men's cross country team continued to rely on its youth movement on Saturday (Sept. 20) as the Jaguars competed at the Rumble in the Fort, hosted by Purdue Fort Wayne. Redshirt sophomore Luke Shappell finished 11th of 112 runners in the 8,000m race to lead the Jaguar attack while redshirt freshman Nick Cook was next in line with a 15th-place finish.

Sophomores Joey LaPatra, Riley Nixon and Joey Ashman rounded out the scoring five.

The Jaguars collected a third-place finish with 80 points, trailing Horizon League foes Green Bay (55) and Wright State (63). Five Horizon League programs took the opportunity to run the event as the course will host this year's Horizon League Championships later this fall.

Shappell crossed in a time of 25:08.3 while Cook finished with a new personal best at 25:15.7. LaPatra finished with a 10-second personal record at 25:34.8 and Nixon closed at 25:38.0. Ashman also recorded a new personal best time, crossing at 25:49.6 to take 11 seconds off his prior best.

"It was a really good way to open the season," Shappell said. "I'm proud of my teammates and all the PRs broken. I'm super excited to see what we can do the rest of the year."

Nolan King, Sam Grimes and Carter Schorr were all knocking on the door of joining the scoring five on Saturday, showing some of the IU Indy depth. King placed 34th in a time of 26:06.3 and Grimes was 35th at 26:06.5. Schorr was 37th overall at 26:10.4. King broke his personal best by 42 seconds and Grimes earned an eight-second personal best. Schorr, a redshirt freshman, also earned a personal best time in his first career 8K.

Green Bay's Noah Jahnke coasted to the individual title in a time of 23:54.3, beating the next closest runner by 46 seconds.

IU Indy will return to action on Friday, Oct. 3 when they compete at Notre Dame's Joe Piane Invitational in South Bend, Ind.
