INDIANAPOLIS – The IU Indy softball team completed the three-game series sweep over the Youngstown State Penguins with an 8-6 victory on Sunday afternoon.
IU Indy came out swinging, plating four runs in the bottom of the first inning.
Molly Kable kicked things off with a two-run homer to left center, scoring
Kendal Calvert. Penguins' errors helped extend the inning, and RBI hits by
Callie Dickerson and
Corinne Martz pushed the lead to 4-0.
The Jaguars added another run in the second inning on an RBI single up the middle by Kable, who finished the day 3-for-4 with three RBIs.
Youngstown State answered with a four-run third inning, cutting the deficit to 5-4.
IU Indy responded with a three-run sixth inning.
Morgan Gilbert tripled to lead off, then scored on
Alexa Holman's RBI single. Dickerson added a groundout RBI, and
Reese Rosenbaum reached on an error that brought in Kable to make it 8-4.
The Penguins threatened in the seventh, scoring two runs but
Callie Dickerson, who pitched 4.1 innings in relief, closed it out without allowing any earned runs.
Clara Phariss (W, 5-6) earned the win after pitching the first 2.2 innings.
IU Indy outhit Youngstown State 11-8 with Kable knocking a team-high three hits with three RBI while Rosenbaum and Gilbert each added two hits.
The Jags improve to 16-23 on the season with a 10-8 Horizon League mark. They will now travel to West Lafayette to face the Purdue Boilermakers on Tuesday, April 15.
