BOILING SPRINGS, NC – The IU Indy softball team wrapped up the Spring in the Springs hosted by Gardner-Webb today as they fell to Stony Brook, 9-5.
Molly Kable led the Jags at the plate with three hits and two RBI.
In the top of the first inning, Kable put the Jags on the board first with an RBI double down the left field line to score
Paige McPhearson.
Kennedy Cowan then singled to the shortstop to score Kable and give the Jags a 2-0 lead.
The Seawolves took one back in the bottom of the second inning on a sacrifice bunt to cut the lead to 2-1.
The Jags added to their lead with one run in the top of the third inning. Kable singled to right field, then an error by right field allowed McPhearson to score, extending the Jags lead to 3-1.
In the bottom half of the third inning, Stony Brook had runners on first and second with one out when Costello knocked an inside the park home run to take the 4-3 lead.
Kable came through for the Jags once again in the fifth inning, tying the game at 4-4 with a triple to center, scoring
Morgan Gilbert.
The Jags' lead didn't last long as the Seawolves opened up the game in the bottom of the fifth frame. Stony Brook scored five runs on four hits and one IU Indy error to take a strong 9-4 lead.
IU Indy could only answer for one run in the top of the seven as Lexi Gordan grounded out to third base, scoring
Callie Dickerson. The Seawolves shut the threat down, sealing the win at 9-5.
Kable led the Jags with three hits including a double and triple with two RBI.
Alexa Holman (L, 2-2) took the loss, giving up nine runs (four earned) on seven hits in 4.2 innings of work.
The Jags are now 3-13 and will now return to Indiana for the Hoosier Classic in Bloomington. IU Indy will face UIC to open the weekend on March 7 at 10:00 AM. They will also face Indiana, Western Michigan and Bowling Green during the weekend.
