VOLLEYBALL DROPS 3-1 HOME DECISION TO YOUNGSTOWN STATE

Jaguars drop second straight match to Penguins on the weekend

INDIANAPOLIS - The IU Indianapolis volleyball team dropped a 3-1 decision at home to Youngstown State on Saturday (Oct. 18), 25-20, 24-26, 25-17, 25-23. Elle Patterson led the IU Indy attack with 18 kills and hit .317 for the match while Ninah Miranda finished with 10 kills.

Gabriela Manchin led three Penguins in double-digit kills with 18 while Layne Graffice added 15. Abbie Householder had 14 kills and 10 digs in the victory.

YSU (9-11, 4-5 HL) hit .311 for the match while limiting the Jaguars to just .205 for the day.

YSU overpowered the Jaguars in the opening set, hitting .324 on way to a 25-20 win. The Penguins used an early 5-0 run to turn an 8-8 tie into a 13-8 advantage. Householder ignited the run with three straight kills, prompting an IU Indy timeout. The Penguins led by as many as eight before ultimately claiming the five-point win. Patterson finished with six kills in the initial set and Miranda added three.

Set two was nip-and-tuck throughout, although the Penguins seized a late 22-20 edge on a Machin kill. After a timeout, IU Indy responded with a Patterson kill, followed by a Jordyn Pax ace. After YSU called timeout, Patterson delivered a go-ahead kill at 23-22. The teams traded points until the Jags sealed it with a YSU service error, followed by a Patterson ace.

The third set was virtually all YSU from the outset as the Penguins surged out to an early lead and never let off the gas. The Jags closed within 15-13 on kills from Patterson and Miranda, but YSU fired back with four straight points with Bianca Giglio on the service line and coasted to a 25-17 victory.

IU Indy fought to extend the match in the fourth set before falling 25-23. Offensively, the attack shared the wealth in the final set with freshman Jillian Tippmann putting down six kills and Patterson adding four more. Miranda and Grace Purichia each added three kills in the fourth set. However, YSU hit .326 with both Manchin and Graffice providing six kills apiece.

Freshman Laura Roeder had a game-high 19 digs and Purichia finished with 49 assists and 16 digs. Sophomore middle Lila Britt came off the bench to provide five kills in 10 attempts while Tippmann finished with seven kills on 13 swings. YSU setter Kameron Blizniak finished with 44 assists and Brie Habeeb had 12 digs.

IU Indy will return to action on Oct. 24-25 when the Jaguars host Oakland University for a two-game set inside the Jungle. Both matches will be broadcast on ESPN+.
