VOLLEYBALL DROPS BACK-TO-BACK MATCHES ON DAY ONE OF DC SHOWDOWN

The Jags fell to Georgetown then dropped second match to George Washington

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Despite winning the first set in each match, the IU Indy volleyball team dropped back-to-back matches on the opening day of the DC Showdown. The Jags fell to Georgetown in the first match of the day, 3-1, then dropped match two to George Washington, 3-1.
 
In the first match of the day, the Jags took the early advantage with a first set victory, 25-16. Georgetown attack errors, kills from Maia Long and Carly Doros as well as a pair of service aces from Grace Purichia powered the Jags to a first set win.
 
Georgetown quickly recovered to take the first three points of set two. After a few back-and-forth lead changes, Georgetown went on a late 5-0 run to take a 22-17 lead. IU Indy totaled three points to cut the lead, but the Hoyas finished out the set at 25-20 to tie the match at one set apiece.
 
The Hoyas came out strong again in the third set with a 6-0 run. IU Indy retook the lead at 17-16 after two Georgetown attack errors and a kill from Long. The lead didn't stick long as the Hoyas once again went on a 6-0 run retaking the lead at 22-17. The Jags fought until the end of the set making it a close 25-23 but Georgetown still came out on top to take a 2-1 set lead.
 
In a must win set for IU Indy, the Jags and Hoyas were tied at 19-19 when IU Indy went on a four point run. With back-to-back kills from Kate White and attack errors from Georgetown, the Jags held a 23-19 lead. Georgetown fought back with a run of their own but this time taking a 25-24 lead. After the Jags tied the set at 25-25, the Hoyas closed out the set and match with back-to-back kills.
 
Long led the attack for the Jags in match one with 12 kills followed by White with 11 and Elle Patterson with 10. Addie Evans led the defense with 22 digs while Patterson added 19.
 
In game two, the Jags once again took an early 1-0 lead but couldn't finish it out, falling to George Washington, 3-1.
 
The Jags were behind early in the opening set with George Washington holding the lead until 12-11. The Jags took a 14-12 lead after kills from Carly Doros and Ava Harris. After GW tied the set at 14-14, IU Indy took four straight points with a kill from Doros and service aces from Harris to retake the lead, 18-14. After going point-for point, the Jags came out on top in set one when a kill from Patterson sealed the set at 25-23.
 
IU Indy dropped the next three sets (25-17, 25-15, 26-24) to lose the match, 3-1.
 
Patterson led the attack with 11 kills followed by Morgan Ostrowski with 10. Purichia totaled 33 assists while Evans added 24 digs.
 
IU Indy will close out the DC Showdown tomorrow afternoon when they face Rider. The Broncos and the Jags are set for a 12:00 PM first serve.
