CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. – The IUPUI softball team began the 2024 Governors Classic hosted by Austin Peay today with back-to-back games. The Jags fell in both games, dropping game one to Indiana State 4-0, then falling in game two against Ohio, 15-2.
In the opening game, the Jags were no-hit by in-state foe, Indiana State falling 4-0. The Sycamores took the lead in the second inning with a home run from Kennedy Shade. Isabella Henning extended the lead for the Sycamores in the third inning with a double, 2-0.
Indiana State doubled their lead to 4-0 in the top of the seventh inning with two runs on one hit and one Jaguar error.
Sophomore
Alexa Holman took the loss on the mound for the Jags giving up four runs, three unearned on six hits with three strikeouts in seven innings of work.
In game two, the Jags fell in five innings to Ohio, 15-2. The Bobcats totaled 13 hits compared to the Jags' six. Errors also proved costly as IUPUI committed five errors in the loss.
Ohio took the lead in the top of the first inning with five runs on four hits. They extended the lead to six in the second inning when Emma Hoffner singled to score Yasmine Loga, 6-0.
The Jags got on the board in the bottom of the third with two runs on three hits.
Rachael Gregory singled to shortstop followed by a single from
Kendal Calvert to put runners on first and second. After a passed ball put Gregory and Calvert on third and second,
Paige McPhearson singled to the pitcher to load the bases.
Kennedy Cowan reached on a fielder's choice which scored Gregory.
Kaylen Garland also reached on a fielder's choice scoring Calvert cutting the deficit to 6-2.
Ohio countered with five runs in the top of the fourth inning to take an 11-2 lead. They added four runs in the fifth inning to seal the victory at 15-2.
IUPUI's starting pitcher,
Carly Metcalf took the loss, giving up four runs on two hits while
Jasmin Speth and
Kaylen Garland also pitched for the Jags, giving up a combined 11 runs on 11 hits in five innings of relief.
The Jags totaled six hits with Calvert and McPhearson each going 2-for-3.
Isabelle Waggner and Gregory also recorded singles in the loss.
IUPUI will next face host Austin Peay tomorrow, Saturday, March 2 at 6:30 PM.
