CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. – The IUPUI softball team totaled ten hits but ultimately fell to host Austin Peay in day two of the Governors Classic, 9-4.
Kendal Calvert was perfect at the plate, going 4-for-4.
The Governors took the early lead in the bottom of the first inning with two runs off a two-run homer from Kylie Campbell. IUPUI quickly answered with a run of their own in the top of the second. With a runner on third,
Kelli Riordan reached on a throwing error by the Governors' second baseman allowing
Emma Wheatley to score, 2-1.
Austin Peay added a run in the bottom half of the second to extend their lead to 3-1. In the third inning, the Governors more than doubled their lead to 7-1 with four runs on two hits. They added one more run in the fourth inning to take an 8-1 lead.
IUPUI slowly inched away at the lead with a run in the fifth inning. With the bases loaded,
Paige McPhearson collected an RBI with a groundout to second, scoring Riordan.
The Governors added one more run in the bottom of the sixth extending their lead to 9-2.
The Jags threatened in the top of the seventh inning but couldn't complete the comeback. With the bases loaded,
Alexa Holman singled to right field, scoring
Rachael Gregory. Still with no outs,
Kennedy Cowan hit a sac fly to score
Kendal Calvert cutting the lead to five. IUPUI couldn't keep the momentum going and fell 9-4.
Calvert led the Jags at the plate, going 4-for-4 with a run while Gregory added three hits and a run. McPhearson, Holman and Riordan each collected a single.
Holman took the loss on the mound for the Jags giving up nine runs on ten hits in six innings of work.
IUPUI will next play two games on the final day of the Governors Classic. Game one against Saint Louis starts at 1:30 PM while game two against Austin Peay is set for 4:00 PM.
