MURRAY, Ky. – The IUPUI softball team fell in back-to-back games during day two of the Velvet Milkman Classic at Murray State. The Jags fell to Western Illinois earlier in the day, 4-2, then dropped the second game to host Murray State, 3-0. They will close out the three-day invite with one game tomorrow, Sunday, February 25.
In the first game of the day, the Jags fell to the Western Illinois Leathernecks, 4-2. IUPUI scored first with one run in the first inning.
Kinsey Pfeiffer singled to center field to score
Rachael Gregory, 1-0.
Western Illinois countered with a solo home run from Bella Alvarez in the top of the second inning, 1-1. They took the lead in the top of the fourth inning with Alvarez's second solo shot of the game, 2-1. In the top of the fifth, the Leathernecks took a bases loaded walk to add an insurance run, 3-1.
IUPUI scratched away at the deficit with a run in the bottom of the fifth inning.
Paige McPhearson reached on a Western Illinois error allowing
Kelli Riordan to score, 3-2.
Western Illinois added a run in the top of the seven inning to seal the win at 4-2.
Sophomore
Alexa Holman took the loss on the mound giving up four runs on eight hits with four walks and two strikeouts in seven innings of work. Gregory led the offense, going 2-for-3 with a run while Pfeiffer,
Kasie Keyes and Riordan all collected a single. Holman added a double to give the Jags six hits in game one.
In game two, the Jags fell to the host Murray State. The Racers jumped on the board first with two runs on two hits in the second inning, 2-0. They added a run in the bottom of the fifth inning with an RBI double, 3-0.
The Jags totaled five hits in the matchup but couldn't string them together to score, falling 3-0. McPhearson went 2-for-3 with a double in game two, to lead the Jags at the plate.
Maicey Bedrick added a triple, Keyes doubled and
Kendal Calvert singled to total five hits.
Carly Metcalf took the loss on the mound for the Jags giving up three runs of five hits with two walks and two strikeouts in 6.0 innings.
IUPUI falls to 1-12 on the season and will close out the three-day invite against Toledo tomorrow at 11:00 AM.
