INDIANAPOLIS – Following a crushing 3-1 defeat at Milwaukee on Friday (Nov. 1), the IU Indianapolis men's soccer team returns to Michael A. Carroll Stadium for its final regular season contest of the campaign, taking on Purdue Fort Wayne on Tuesday (Nov. 5). Kickoff is set for 2:00 p.m. with ESPN+ streaming the action live.
Head coach
Sid van Druenen was disappointed with Friday's result but was proud of his team's effort and fight. After
Cameron Radeke's first half goal gave the Jaguars the lead, the Panthers pounced in the second half, scoring three second-half goals to earn three points. The loss officially eliminated the Jags from the postseason race.
Purdue Fort Wayne (6-6-2, 3-4-1) comes into the match having lost three of its last four, not registering a win since Oct. 5 against Robert Morris. Despite the side's recent poor form, it is a win-and-you're-in situation for the Mastodons, who are looking to make back-to-back postseason appearances.
The 'Dons have been stout defensively, registering six shutouts and giving up just 1.29 goals per game. Nic Diana has been spectacular in goal, leading the league in goals against average (1.00) and shutouts per game (.455). Diana along with defenders Andrew Hollenbach and Juan Romero have each earned #HLMSOC Defensive Player of the Week during the season. Hollenbach has played all 90 minutes 11 times this year which ranks second on the team, while Romero has gone the distance six times. Fellow defender Daniel Tareke has started all 14 matches while leading the team with 1197 minutes played. Tareke is one of just four players to start all 14 contests (Christian Leon, Felipe Medina and Marco Valencia).
The offense is led by Shane Anderson and James Maxwell, who have combined for half the team's goals (Anderson has seven and Maxwell has five). The team has assisted on 20 of its 24 goals, led by Medina with three and six players with two. Taking out a 10-o victory over IU East, Purdue Fort Wayne has scored just over a goal per game (14 goals in 13 games) and have tallied just twice in its previous four matches.
IU Indy's (5-8-3, 2-5-1) offense is in a similar spot, scoring less than a goal per game having netted just four times in its last five while being shut out twice in the stretch. In that same span, the team won just one match and losing four. The Jags, however, have been good at home, winning two and drawing one in its last three contests. Much of that success has come because of the stellar defense, giving up just one goal and recording two shutouts during the stretch. Throughout the season the side has given up just 1.36 goals per contest, with keeper
Mason Taylor leading the league in saves (68) and save percentage (.810), earning #HLMSOC Defensive Player of the Week twice for his efforts.
