GREEN BAY, Wisc. - The IU Indianapolis men's and women's cross country teams will head north this weekend to participate in the Horizon League Cross Country Championships, hosted by Green Bay at Shorewood Cross Country Course. The women's 6,000m race will go off at 12:00 p.m. ET on Saturday (Nov. 2), followed by the men's 8,000m race at 1:00 p.m.
Both squads enter the championship portion of their schedules seeking a Horizon League title on Saturday.
On the women's side, head coach
Antonio McDaniel's team has been paced by fifth-year senior
Ellie Cates throughout the season. Cates had led the Jaguars to the finish line in all four meets this season, including running a personal best 5K time of 17:49.6 at Notre Dame's Joe Piane Invitational on Oct. 4 and a personal best 6K time of 21:38.7 at the Angel Mounds Invite on Oct. 18. Newcomer
Carina Alanis has emerged as the team's No. 2 runner and the remainder of the lineup has been largely filled by freshmen
Ella Colclesser,
Aubrey Nowaskie and
Julianna Crow. Both
Laci Provenzano and
Grace Bragg missed the Angel Mounds Invite, but are looking for redemptive performances at the league championships to push the Jaguars up the leaderboard. Meanwhile,
Ella Tamburrino and
Mary Fritch both had big efforts at Angel Mounds in the team's first 6K of the season.
Cates earned a second team All-Horizon League spot last season by virtue of her 14th place finish at the league championships. In doing so, she helped the Jaguars to a fourth-place team finish.
On the men's side, the Jaguars enter the postseason ranked No. 15 in the Great Lakes Region and has yet to put together a full team effort during the regular season. Senior
Nate Kaiser made his season debut at the Bradley 'Pink' Classic with an 8K time of 24:13.60. Senior
Grant Moon charged hard to a finish that race at 24:18.05, placing 22nd of 265 runners. Behind that duo, redshirt freshman
Luke Shappell is a three-time #HLXC Men's Freshman of the Week honoree and
Jay Pillai and
Noah Price have each collected the award once. Other returners expected to factor in to the Jaguars' top five include
Mitchell Gits and
Matt Mitsch. A group of true freshmen that includes
Joey Ashman,
Joey LaPatra and
Riley Nixon will also be vying for a spot among the team's scorers.
Kaiser was a first team All-Horizon League performer last season by placing fifth overall at the league championships, helping the Jaguars to a runner-up finish.
A full recap and results of Saturday's two races will be posted to IUIndyJags.com immediately afterwards.
