CLEVELAND, Tenn. - Sophomore
Katie Moore earned an individual win to highlight the women's track and field team's efforts on day one of the Flames Invitational, hosted by Lee University on Friday (Apr. 7). Moore collected a victory in the 400m hurdles on a day in which a number of Jaguars had impressive showings.
Freshman
Modupe Awosanya opened the day with a fifth-place finish among 65 entrants in the 200m event. Awosanya crossed at 25.10 with a strong tailwind aiding her race, finishing fourth in her heat and fifth overall.
Olivia Martinez clocked a time of 27.09 seconds and
Madelynn Denny booked a time of 27.67, placing third in her heat.
Later in the day, Moore put on a show in the 400m hurdles, winning the event with a personal best time of 1:03.59, winning by nearly a half second and shaving a tenth of a second off her prior best.
"I didn't have a great race at Cincinnati last week, so I trained very intently this week and knew what I needed to do to change that," Moore said. "The race went how I wanted and how I trained to do it. I am grateful for the win and for a PR, but there's still work to do."
The distance crew closed out day one with junior
Ellie Cates leading the way in the 5,000m race with a personal best time of 17:24.37, taking eight seconds off her prior best.
