BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The IUPUI softball team closes out day two of the Bulldog Classic with a five-inning win over Southern Indiana, 10-2 after a loss to Samford earlier in the day, 3-1.
Carly Metcalf picked up her first win of the season.
In game one, the Jags fell to Samford, 3-1. The Bulldogs scored three in the bottom of the second inning off a homer from McKenzie Newcomb. IUPUI answered with one run in the top of the third frame but couldn't overcome the 3-1 deficit.
Kennedy Cowan scored the sole run for IUPUI taking home on a passed ball.
Madison Bryant took the loss giving up three runs on four hits and eight walks in six innings of work. Bryant fanned five batters in the loss.

Kinsey Pfieffer and
Maicey Bedrick each hit a double with Cowan and Freiberg each going 2-for-4.
IUPUI secured their second win of the season with a 10-2 five-inning victory over Southern Indiana in game two of the day.
Freiberg hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the first inning to give the Jags the early lead, 2-0. USI chipped away at the lead with one run in the top of the third inning, 2-1. The Jags quickly answered in the bottom half of the inning when Cowan knocked a two-run homerun over the left field fence extending the lead to 4-1.
The Screaming Eagles once again answered with one run in the top of the fifth inning to cut the lead to two, 4-2.
In the bottom of the fifth inning, IUPUI sealed the win with six runs on five hits. With the bases loaded,
Rachael Gregory singled to left field to score
Jaida Speth. Pfieffer singled through the right side to score
Morgan Gilbert followed by an RBI single from
Jordan Jenkins to score Cowan. Gregory scored on a throwing error by the USI shortstop followed by a sacrifice fly from Bedrick scoring
Kasie Keyes.
Jaida Speth reached on a fielding error by the shortstop to score
Kennedy Warbritton and seal the 10-2 victory.
Metcalf earned the win only allowing two runs on seven hits in five innings of work. Cowan and Freiberg each collected two RBI with each knocking a homerun. Gilbert also went 2-for-2 with three runs.
The Jags close out the Bulldog Classic tomorrow against North Alabama at 4:00 PM ET.
