ALLENDALE, Mich. - Junior
Ellie Cates clocked a new personal best in the mile to lead the IUPUI women's track and field team's efforts on day one at Grand Valley State this weekend. Cates took four seconds off her prior best and crossed at 5:03.93 as she continues to creep closer to a sub-5 minute mark on the indoor surface.
"I'm happy with how things are shaping up before conference in a couple weeks," Cates said. "I'm excited to see what everyone does and stun the competition."
Behind her, freshman
Julie Smith spun a time of 5:16.91.
Earlier in the day, sophomore
Laci Provenzano ran a 5,000m time of 18:42.35 and junior
Madison Fry clocked a time of 10:24.15 in the 3,000m event.
Kyla Kante ran 9.36 in the 60m hurdles and
Karis Davis was the team's top entrant in the 60m dash with a time of 7.86 seconds.
Modupe Awosanya was just a tick behind her at 7.90 seconds.
Sophia Taylor took aim at lowering her 800m time and finished her race at 2:19.71.
IUPUI's lone jumper to compete on Friday was freshman
Reese McCuan, who participated in the triple jump. McCuan's best effort of the day was 11.00m (36' 1.25'').
The Jaguars will be back in action on Saturday (Feb. 11) at Grand Valley.
