YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – Junior
Briana Brown collected 15 kills in the IUPUI volleyball team's loss to Youngstown State on Friday night, 3-2. IUPUI is now 3-12 in conference play with three games left.
Despite taking the first two points in the first set, the Jags fell behind early, 7-3. IUPUI brought the score within one at 12-11 with kills from Brown and
Grace Purichia before Youngstown State went on a 4-1 run. The Jags couldn't recover as they fell in the first set, 25-18.
IUPUI didn't hesitate to attack in the second set earning the win to tie the match at one set a piece. The Jags went on a 17-2 run to start the set, dominating the set with a .321 hitting percentage and 13 kills. With a 25-11 final set score, the Jags tied the match at 1-1.
The third set was a back-and-forth battle with several ties. A kill by
Morgan Ostrowski late in the set at 23-21 forced a Youngstown State timeout. Coming out of the timeout the Jags closed out the set with back-to-back points, including an ace from
Brooke Phillips, 25-21.
Although the Jaguars held the lead late in the fourth set at 22-21, the Penguins stole the last four points for a fourth set win, 25-22. With the match tied, Youngstown State once again came from behind in the fifth and deciding set to win the match, 15-12.
Brown led the attack with 15 kills while
Maia Long followed with 10. Purichia led in assists with 22 while
Ava Harris totaled 16 digs and three aces.
IUPUI is now 9-17 overall and 3-12 in conference with just three matches to close out the 2023-24 season. They will next travel to Oakland on Tuesday, November 7 for a 6:00 PM first serve.
