MEN'S SOCCER TO OPEN HORIZON LEAGUE PLAY AT WRIGHT STATE

Jaguars (1-1-2, 0-0 HL) to face Raiders at 5:00 p.m. on Saturday (Sept. 10)

9/8/2022 10:21:00 AM

DAYTON, Ohio - The IUPUI men's soccer team will open Horizon League play on Saturday (Sept. 10) when the Jaguars face head coach Sid van Druenen's former squad, Wright State, on the road at 5:00 p.m. Saturday's contest will be broadcast on ESPN+.

IUPUI (1-1-2, 0-0 HL) is coming off an unbeaten week as the Jaguars put up a 5-1 thumping of Eastern Illinois and a wild 3-3 draw with Western Illinois on Sunday. IUPUI's five goals were the program's most in a game since 2009 as redshirt freshman Josemir Gomez tallied twice and Lukas Hackaa tallied the game-winner and assisted on two other scores. IUPUI peppered EIU with 10 shots on goal and scored four unanswered goals after each team tallied in the game's first eight minutes. Freshman defender Edgar Correia also had a pair of assists. Freshman Gavin O'Shea netted his first career goal in the waning moments, thanks to an assist from classmate Caleb McComas

On Sunday, IUPUI clawed from a 2-0 deficit to ultimately steal a result with a 3-3 draw. IUPUI got game-tying goals in both the 87th and 88th minutes, the final coming from an Ethan Vermillion shot from the right side that went through the legs of the WIU keeper for an equalizer. Less than a minute prior, freshman back Brady Horn scored his first collegiate goal on a header that Vermillion helped setup.

For the year, IUPUI leads the Horizon League in goals (11), assists (13), points (35) and shot attempts (64). Hackaa is tied for third in the country with four assists and is one of 15 players in the nation averaging at least one assist per game this season. As a team, IUPUI is 11th nationally with 13 assists and 12th in the country with 11 goals scored.

QUOTABLE
"It was absolutely an emotional roller coaster - it was craziness, it was entertaining. At the same time, we put ourselves in a position we shouldn't have put ourselves in, but we responded really well. The guys showed tremendous grit, heart and sweat and ability to go down 2-0, to get it to 2-2, then to concede right away and then straight up score to make it 3-3. It was a game that we really don't want to be in too often," van Druenen said after the 3-3 draw with Western Illinois on Sunday (Sept. 4).

SCOUTING WRIGHT STATE
Wright State is 0-3-1 to start the year, having earned a scoreless draw with Stetson and dropping three-in-a-row at Jacksonville, Akron and Ohio State. The Raiders have been outscored 8-1 on the year and outshot 73-43 in four games. Joe Kouadio has WSU's lone goal, having scored on a penalty kick. In goal, Sebastian Jimenez has started all four matches, registering a 1.38 goals against average and .783 save percentage with a shutout.

SERIES HISTORY
Wright State has dominated the head-to-head series as IUPUI is just 4-18-0 all-time against the Raiders. IUPUI has never won in Dayton, going 0-10 in the 10 meetings on the road. IUPUI won 1-0 in last year's meeting in Indianapolis on a Rayan Choukri goal in the game's 30th minute. The victory snapped an eight-game skid to WSU.

UP NEXT
IUPUI will head to Chicago to face Loyola on Tuesday night (Sept. 13) in a 6:00 p.m. CT (7 Eastern) kickoff. That contest is slated to be aired on ESPN+.
