INDIANAPOLIS - The IUPUI men's soccer team will continue its stretch of three straight Horizon League contests this week when the Jaguars host Cleveland State on Wednesday (Sept. 28) before heading north to Milwaukee on Saturday (Oct. 1). Both contests will be available on ESPN+.
IUPUI (1-3-4, 0-0-2 HL) has opened Horizon League play with a pair of road draws, having played both Wright State (2-2) and Detroit Mercy (0-0) to stalemates. While the attack has been slowed of late, the Jaguars have still been impressive offensively all season long, totaling 14 goals and 18 assists through eight games. Redshirt freshman
Josemir Gomez has a team-high five goals and junior midfielder
Lukas Hackaa has three goals and a team-high four assists. Junior
Logan Finnegan leads the team with 14 shot attempts, while also contributing two goals and two assists.
Junior goalkeeper
Lucas Morefield registered his first shutout of the season at Detroit Mercy over the weekend, making four saves in blanking the Titans. Morefield has started seven of the Jaguars' eight contests with a 1.71 goals against average and .657 save percentage. The shutout was the fourth of his collegiate career. In front of him, head coach
Sid van Druenen has relied heavily on freshmen as
Edgar Correia and
Dominic Breidenbach have started all eight contests in the back third. Correia has played a team-high 650 minutes and Breidenbach is fourth on the team with 627 minutes.
Seven different freshmen have started at least one match this season and at Loyola on Sept. 13, van Druenen's starting lineup had seven freshmen included.
QUOTABLE
"(Detroit) is always a hard place to come play. They're very well organized - very well setup defensively. They're strong in the counter and I think we did a good job controlling their counterattack most of the game. We created enough (opportunities) maybe to sneak away with a win, but I think at the end of the day, a tie is a fair result. A clean sheet is a massive positive. On the road, that's never easy, so that's a big, big thing for us to build on. I feel pretty good about the result tonight," van Druenen said following Saturday's scoreless draw at Detroit Mercy.
SCOUTING CLEVELAND STATE
Cleveland State is 5-1-2 overall and 1-0-1 in Horizon League play with a 4-3 win over Milwaukee and a 1-1 draw at Detroit Mercy. The Vikings recently played No. 13 Ohio State to a scoreless tie in Cleveland. Pablo Kawecki and Bojan Kolevski have a team-high five goals each while Kawecki and Jannis Schmidt have each tallied two game-winners. Two different CSU goalkeepers have made four starts with Omeed Naeemy owning a 1.00 goals against average and .714 save percentage and Max Kasputis has a 1.52 GAA and .400 save percentage. The Vikings are unbeaten on the road this season, going 3-0-1 in four road contests.
SCOUTING MILWAUKEE
Milwaukee is 1-6-2 overall and 0-2 in league play with losses to Robert Morris and Cleveland State. The Panthers lone win was a 2-1 victory earlier this season over Big Ten foe Wisconsin. Logan Farrington leads the Milwaukee attack with four goals and an assist and both Gabe Anguil and Raul Medina have a team-high three assists. In goal, Nick Chiappa has played the bulk of the team's minutes with a 2.96 goals against average with a .360 save percentage and the team's lone win. Gijs Van Schouten has made four starts with a 2.78 GAA and 17 saves with a .630 save percentage. The Panthers are 1-1-2 at home this season and will host Wright State on Wednesday (Sept. 28).
