WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The IUPUI men's golf team put up rounds of 316 and 307 under tough conditions at the Boilermaker Invitational on Saturday (Apr. 9), played at Purdue's Ackerman-Allen Golf Course. Illinois leads the 14-team event at 7-under 561 and host Purdue is second at 6-under 562. No other team was under par after 36 holes as Rutgers is third at 575.

Freshman Sam McWilliams and sophomore Brock Aten led the Jaguars on Saturday, each closing their day at 12-over 154.

Scoring was at a premium in round one as the elements made life miserable on the field. The Jaguars never truly found their footing as McWilliams carded a team-best 76 and senior Matthew Baxter posted a 79. Junior Preston Nanthavong notched a round of 80 and Aten closed at 81 despite a team-high four birdies. However, Aten made just five pars in the morning round as 13 of the 14 teams scored better in round two than they did in round one.

"The golf course is playing really long and wet," Aten said. "Obvioiusly we struggled today, but I think if we go out tomorrow and just hit as many solid shots as we can, we'll play well."

Round two was cleaner all around as Aten carded a team-best 73 with three more birdies and Taylor Gardner shot 76. McWilliams made just one birdie in his round of 78 and both Baxter and Nanthavong had rounds of 80.

IUPUI had a respectable 17 birdies as a team on Saturday but was next-to-last among the 14-team field with 88 pars. Aten's seven birdies are tied for tenth among the 81-player field while McWilliams had a team-high 20 pars.

Illinois' Adrien Dumont de Chassart is atop the leaderboard at 8-under 134 and Purdue's Cole Bradley is second at 137.

Sunday's final round is slated to begin at 9:00 a.m.
