INDIANAPOLIS – The IUPUI softball team fell to Green Bay in a doubleheader on Friday afternoon. They lost the first game 11-3 in five innings and dropped the second game 6-3. The Jags finish the three-game series tomorrow when they celebrate senior day starting at 1:00 PM.
In game one Green Bay (21-20, 13-8 HL) runruled the Jags in five innings, 11-3. The Phoenix took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning with two runs on two hits. They extended their lead to 4-0 with two runs on three hits in the top of the second inning.
IUPUI (10-34, 7-13 HL) got one back in the bottom of the third inning, 4-1.
Jaylin Calvert reached on a walk then scored after
Morgan Gilbert reached base on an error.
Green Bay scored seven runs on four hits and two errors to take a 11-1 lead in the top of the fourth inning. The Jags cut the lead to eight in the bottom of the fourth frame after they scored two runs on two hits. IUPUI loaded the bases with singles from
Mackenzie Myars and
Jaida Speth and Barnes hit by pitch.
Jaylin Calvert then hit a sacrifice fly to left field to score one run for the Jags.
Kasie Keyes grounded out to the pitcher, but
Jaida Speth came in to score and cut the lead to 11-3.
Three runs weren't enough as the Phoenix runruled the Jags in five innings, 11-3.
Madison Bryant took the loss on the mound giving up eight runs (seven unearned) on seven hits in three innings of work. Myars and Speth recorded the only two hits in the loss.
In game two the Phoenix defeated the Jags, 6-3. Green Bay jumped out to a 2-0 lead with two runs on two hits in the top of the first inning.
IUPUI took the lead in the bottom of the third inning with three runs on two hits and two errors. Gilbert led the inning off reaching base on an error by the Phoenix's shortstop.
Hailey Pop doubled down the left field line to put runners at second and third with no outs. Myars reached on a fielder's choice that scored Gilbert. Calvert then doubled to right field to score two runs and give the Jags the 3-2 lead.
The lead didn't last long as Green Bay scored two runs on two hits in the top of the fourth frame to retake the lead 4-3. The Phoenix went on to score two more runs in the top of the sixth inning to extend their lead to 6-3.
Isabelle Waggner took the loss on the mound giving up six runs on 11 hits in seven innings of work. Pop went 4-for-4 with one run while
Rachael Gregory, Gilbert, Speth, Calvert,
Victoria Sivert,
Abbey Haas and Keyes each recorded a hit in game two.
IUPUI and Green Bay close out the series tomorrow at 1:00 PM.
