SPRINGBORO, Ohio - The IUPUI men's golf team played exceptionally well on day one of the Wright State Invitational on Sunday (Apr. 17), carding rounds of 298 and 299 to sit third of 13 teams competing this week. Host Wright State leads the field at 575 and Valparaiso is second at 592 while the Jaguars are third at 597, leading Ohio, Robert Morris and Youngstown State by a single shot. Monday's final round is slated for an 8:30 a.m. shotgun start.
Freshman
Sam McWilliams was tied atop the leaderboard after an opening round, 1-under 70 and is tied for third after a second round 75. His 3-over 145 is three shots behind the leader, Davis Root of Wright State. McWilliams dodged trouble for much of the day while scoring six birdies over 36 holes.
"Lately I had been struggling so it was nice to play well today," McWilliams said. "I focused on working on my stuff around the green and I did that much better today. It's really cool to see the team in a good spot after these two rounds."
Sophomore
Brock Aten is tied for tenth overall at 6-over 148 (75-73), including a team-high eight birdies on Sunday, which tied for the tournament lead on day one. Senior
Matthew Baxter is tied for 20th at 151 (76-75) including shaking off a stretch of three straight double bogeys by rallying to make three birdies in a four-hole span late in his second round.
Taylor Gardner ended his day at 155 (77-78) and true freshman
Colten Girgis is at 157 (81-76). Redshirt freshman
Morgan Tournemire sits at 162 (85-77).
McWilliams had a team-high 22 pars on Sunday.
