INDIANAPOLIS – Down 2-0 in the bottom of the sixth, the Jags came back to defeat Purdue Fort Wayne, 3-2 in the first game of the Sunday doubleheader then fell 2-1 in the second game. With the second game loss, IUPUI lost the three-game series 2-1.
In game one the Jaguars were down by two heading into the bottom of the sixth frame and scored three runs to take the lead. IUPUI stranded a couple runners in the top of the seventh inning to complete the comeback, 3-2.
Purdue Fort Wayne took the early lead in the top of the third inning with back-to-back doubles from Brayden Lickey and Alise Moneypenny to score Lickey. They scored one more run in the top of the fourth inning off a double from Thais Uyema to score Alise Hale and extend their lead, 2-0.
After a scoreless fifth inning, IUPUI scored three runs on four hits and two Mastodon errors in the bottom of the sixth inning. The Jags got on the board with an RBI single from
Hailey Pop to score
Rachael Gregory.
Maicey Bedrick doubled to right center to put runners on second and third for
Victoria Sivert. Sivert doubled to left field to score Pop and Bedrick scored on an error by the Mastodons' left fielder giving the Jags the 3-2 lead.
In the top of the seventh inning, PFW put two runners on base, but the Jags shut the threat down and sealed the comeback victory, 3-2.
Freshman
Isabelle Waggner (W, 3-3) earned the win throwing a complete game giving up two runs on seven hits with just one walk. Gregory went 2-for-2 with two doubles and one run while Pop went 2-for-3 with a double, one run and one RBI. Bedrick, Sivert and
Jaylin Calvert all doubled in the win.
In game two the Mastodons completed their own comeback win to take down the Jags, 2-1.
IUPUI took the lead in the bottom of the fourth inning after Bedrick tripled to left center then scored on a wild pitch, 1-0.
In the top of the fifth frame the Mastodons evened the score at 1-1 with a sacrifice fly from Emma McMillan to score Sonia Solis. PFW took the lead an inning later in the top of the sixth with an RBI single by Brooke Wintlend to score Taylor Warne.
The Jags couldn't cut the deficit and fell, 2-1 to finish the series.
Madison Bryant (L, 4-15) took the loss giving up two runs on three hits with 10 strikeouts in seven innings. Bedrick went 3-for-3 with a triple and a run.
Morgan Gilbert, Gregory and
Kasie Keyes all recorded hits in the loss.
IUPUI is now 8-26 overall and 6-6 in the Horizon League. They host Ball State for a single game on Tuesday (April 12) at 2:00 PM.
