WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The IUPUI men's golf team carded a final round 308 at this weekend's Boilermaker Invitational, finishing the 54-hole tournament at 931 (316-307-308).
Brock Aten,
Matthew Baxter and
Taylor Gardner all posted final rounds of 76 while junior
Preston Nanthavong had a countable round of 80 to cap the group of scorers.
"I'm proud of our guys. We finished better today and got better towards the end," head coach
Jamie Broce said. "The conditions were challenging and we needed to adjust quicker to the fast greens and wet conditions. Doing the simple things well is our main concern heading towards next week's event.
"It's a super coachable group of guys and we will get there - it just takes a little time and a couple breakthroughs to really get us going."
Aten led the Jaguars for the week at 230 (81-73-76), finishing tied for 53rd among the 81-player field. Both Baxter and
Sam McWilliams finished at 235 to tie for 68th overall.
Illinois won the team title at 10-under 842 and host Purdue was runner-up at 2-under 850. Illinois' Adrien Dumont de Chassart edged Purdue's Cole Bradley by a single shot for medalist honors, finishing the tournament at 9-under 204.
By and large, IUPUI limited big numbers on Sunday (Apr. 10), but found scoring difficult at Ackerman-Allen. Baxter started slowly but finished strong, playing the final eight holes of the event to 2-under. Aten was similar, playing his final nine holes to even par while Gardner was 1-over on his final nine holes.
For the tournament, Aten had a team-high nine birdies, tying for 11th among the field. However, IUPUI struggled to make pars, ranking next-to-last in the team standings in that category.
IUPUI will return to action on Sunday, Apr. 17 when the Jaguars begin play at the Wright State Invitational in Springboro, Ohio.
