Morgan Tournemire carded an opening round 1-over 71 to lead the IUPUI golf team's four individual entries at this week's Butler Spring Invitational at Highland Golf and Country Club on Monday (Mar. 28). Play was pushed back to an afternoon start with bitter temperatures in Central Indiana and the tournament was shortened from 54 holes to 36 holes with a round being cut from Monday's play.Â
Tournemire was consistent throughout, making 13 pars and a pair of birdies on the tournament's opening day. He sits three shots off the lead heading into Tuesday's final round as Valparaiso's Anthony Delisanti and Illinois' Luke Armbrust both shot 2-under 68 on Monday. All total, 10 players among the 98-player field shot par or better on Monday, leaving Tournemire tied for 11th overall.Â
"I was really impressed overall. We are doing things the right way and we are more prepared," head coach
Jamie Broce said. "Our game plan is solid and we are close to shooting some very good numbers. We made good decisions, gave ourselves some good chances and just need to take advantage of some of our scoring opportunities.Â
"The men have been working very hard on their games and I expect them to shoot some under pars very soon."
Both
Preston Nanthavong and
Josh Yoder ended their days at 5-over, tied for 54th overall. Nanthavong made one birdie during the opening round and Yoder had three, including one on his second and 18th holes of the day.Â
Meanwhile,
Kevin Tillery finished at 7-over 77, making seven bogeys and 11 pars for the day.Â
Valparaiso leads the team scoring at 1-under 279 and host Butler is second at 286. Play will resume at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday (Mar. 29) at Highland.Â
