INDIANAPOLIS – The IUPUI softball team earned their first conference win on the season as the Jags run ruled Detroit Mercy in five innings, 9-1. Junior
Maicey Bedrick went 3-for-4 with a home run, triple, double and four RBI. Sophomore
Madison Bryant earned the win on the mound for the Jags.
IUPUI (3-22) took the early lead with three runs in the bottom of the first inning.
Kendal Calvert led the inning off with a bunt single to third base and stole second.
Rachael Gregory doubled to left center to score Calvert. Bedrick followed Gregory with a double of her own to right center to collect her first RBI of the day and score Gregory.
Jordan Barnes later reached on a fielding error by the Titans' third baseman which allowed Bedrick to score and give the Jags a 3-0 lead.
Detroit Mercy (0-17) chipped away at the lead with a run of their own in the top of the second inning. Taryn Peru singled to lead off the inning. After a walk to Jordyn Chapman and a wild pitch, Liz Paver hit a sacrifice fly to left field to score Peru and put the Titans on the board, 3-1.
The Jags added two more runs in the bottom of the second frame.
Kendal Calvert doubled to right center then with two outs Bedrick homered to left center to extend the lead to 5-1.
After a scoreless third inning, the Jags scored two in the bottom of the fourth inning. Gregory doubled to lead off the inning followed by a triple from Bedrick. Bedrick scored on the play due to a throwing error by the Titans to give the Jags a 7-1 lead.
IUPUI's defense shut the Titans down in the top of the fifth with a strikeout and back-to-back groundouts. The Jaguars scored two in the bottom half of the inning to complete the run rule.
Kasie Keyes started the inning off drawing a walk followed by singles from Gilbert and
Kendal Calvert to load the bases. Gregory singled to score Keyes and
Hailey Pop walked it off with a single up the middle to score Gilbert, 9-1.
The Jags' offense totaled a season-high 14 hits.
Kendal Calvert, Gregory, and Bedrick each recorded three hits while Pop,
Ashley Shelton, Barnes, Keyes and Gilbert each recorded a hit. Gregory collected two RBI with two doubles.
Madison Bryant earned the complete game win on the mound allowing only one run on two hits with six strikeouts in 5.0 innings pitched.
The Jaguars are scheduled to face the Titans in a doubleheader tomorrow with the first game starting at 1:00 PM ET.
