TOLEDO, Ohio - The IUPUI men's tennis team got singles wins from
Sean Bailey and
Blessing Benibo on Friday (Feb. 25) but came up short on the road at Toledo, 5-2. The match was tight from the outset, but the Rockets captured the doubles point and won four of the six singles matches to earn the win.
Benibo and
Colton Morehart were leading their match at No. 2 doubles by a 5-2 count, but the Rockets collected victories at Nos. 1 and 3 to earn the point.
"It was a tough match on the road while being down some key players," said head coach
Bren Vasalakis. "We had opportunities to take over in singles but didn't execute on a few big points. The guys battled hard, we just came up short."
In singles play, Toledo (5-4) made quick work at the top spot and the No. 5 spot in the lineup to seize a 3-0 lead. However, the remaining four matches in progress were all tight, leaving the outcome in limbo. Toledo's Luis Kleinschnitz nudged past
Canaan Sellers at the No. 6 spot by a 7-5, 6-1 score to complete the victory.
Bailey won a tough match at the No. 2 spot in the lineup, 7-5, 6-4 for his sixth singles victory of the season and fifth in dual matches. Benibo won a three-set effort at the No. 4 spot, 6-4, 1-6, 7-5 for his fifth win of the campaign.
Kamil Kozerski also split sets at No. 3 but fell 2-6, 6-2, 6-2 to Krzysztof Wetoszka.
The Jags won't compete again until Saturday, Mar. 12 when they face LIU Brooklyn in Orlando, Fla.
