ORLANDO, Fla. - The IUPUI men's tennis team earned a hard fought 4-3 victory over LIU on Friday night (Mar. 11), ending a long day under the lights as part of the Jaguars' Spring Break trip. IUPUI was knocked off 7-0 by Radford earlier in the day in the first of two matches to open the trip.
IUPUI (4-10) fended off a frisky LIU (6-5) squad in a match that pushed beyond four hours. IUPUI won the doubles point behind victories from the No. 1 duo of
Alex Jochim and
Emil Jankowski (6-4) and a 7-6 (7-2) win from
Sean Bailey and
Kamil Kozerski at the No. 3 spot. The tight scores were a precursor of what was to come in singles play.
LIU battled back in front with wins at the Nos. 3 and 5 spots before Jochim knotted the score with a 6-3, 7-6 victory at No. 1 singles. Kozerski rallied from an opening set loss to collect a win at the No. 4 spot, 2-6, 6-3, 6-4 to give the Jags the lead. It marked Kozerski's team-high ninth singles win of the year and sixth this spring.
Meanwhile,
Sean Bailey was locked in a marathon at No. 2 singles before ultimately clinching a 7-5, 3-6, 6-4 triumph. Bailey collected his sixth win of the spring, matching Kozerski's team-high mark. Freshman
Noah Viste rounded out the lineup with a loss at No. 6 singles.
"It felt amazing. This team has gone through a lot this year and it feels really good to grind out a tough win against a good team," Viste said.
Earlier in the day, Radford (8-4) collected a 7-0 win over the Jaguars.
Jankowski had a strong showing at No. 6 singles but fell in his match, 6-0, 4-6, 1-0 (10-6). All the other singles matches were decided in straight sets.
