INDIANAPOLIS – With the Horizon League regular season championship on the line, the IUPUI women's basketball team earned a demanding win over Youngstown State, 68-45. With the win, the Jaguars are now tied at the top of the Horizon League.
Graduate student
Macee Williams led the Jags just short of a double-double with 18 points and eight rebounds. She also added three assists while senior
Morgan Allen totaled a season-high 12 points with seven rebounds and one assist.
"
Morgan Allen should be really proud of herself after her performance. Having seniors step up like that in key moments are special."
Rachel McLimore added 10 points and three assists. While three Jags scored in double-digits, the IUPUI defense was hard to break through. IUPUI held Youngstown State to just 45 points, which is over 20 points short of their average per game of 67.1 points.
"I thought our defensive energy was outstanding tonight and we guarded the three-point line with purpose."
When it came down to the final quarter, IUPUI held the Penguins to just 12.5 percent (1-of-8) from behind the arc. The Jaguar defense forced 14 Youngstown State turnovers and collected five blocks while totaling 27 defensive boards.
Sophomore
Rachel Kent added nine points,
Madison Wise totaled seven points and three rebounds while
Destiny Perkins collected three points.
Anna Mortag,
Jaci Jones and
Logan Lewis all scored points for the Jags off the bench.
Natalie Andersen grabbed four rebounds in the win.
IUPUI is currently tied for first in the Horizon League with Youngstown State as both the Jags and the Penguins are now 17-4. If the Jags win on Saturday while Youngstown State loses, then the Jags will be the sole Horizon League regular season champs due to win percentage. If both IUPUI and Youngstown State wins then they will share the title, but IUPUI will earn the top seed in the #HLWBB Tournament due to the Jaguar's regular season sweep of the Penguins.
The Jaguars will play for the title on Saturday vs. Robert Morris with tip off at 2:00 pm on ESPN+. IUPUI will honor their seniors before the game.
