INDIANAPOLIS - It wasn't for a lack of trying, but the IUPUI basketball team was foiled by a subpar shooting night as the Jaguars fell at home to Milwaukee, 66-54. IUPUI shot just 32.8 percent from the floor and saw the Panthers shoot 56.5 percent for the game and 46.7 percent from three-point range. IUPUI managed to click off 12 more field goal attempts than the guests, but made seven fewer than Milwaukee in the loss.
B.J. Maxwell led four Jaguars in double-digits with 14 points and freshman
Chuks Isitua registered a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds.
Nathan McClure added 12 points and seven boards and
Mike DePersia closed with 10 points and five assists.
DeAndre Gholston led all players with 20 points on 8-of-14 shooting to go along with eight boards and five assists.
"I liked our fight and that we stuck to our gameplan," head coach Matt Crenshaw said. "We may have forced some shots, but we really want to drive (Milwaukee) and look to make the extra pass. I thought we did a good job of that, we got in the bonus pretty early in the second half and were able to get to the free throw line.
"We just didn't make enough shots and some of those were some good looks."
IUPUI (3-24, 1-15 HL) scored the game's first seven points and led for most of the first half until the offense went silent over the final seven minutes. The Jaguars led 22-16 when Maxwell swished a pair of free throws at the 7:12 mark, but were outscored 12-3 from there as Milwaukee (10-20, 8-13 HL) built a three-point halftime lead.
Milwaukee proceeded to open the second half with a 12-2 burst to extend its lead out to 13 in the opening stages of the half. The lead grew as large as 16 before the scrappy Jaguars chipped away to close within seven. Freshman
Boston Stanton III hit a trey off a DePersia assist at the 6:55 mark and Isitua followed with a layup off a
Bakari LaStrap find on the next trip to make it 51-44. IUPUI had a chance to cut it to four, but McClure misfired on an open trey with 5:44 remaining.
Milwaukee responded with the game's next six points to essentially seal the victory.
IUPUI matched its season-low with just nine turnovers, but struggled to knock down shots, hitting 19-of-58 attempts overall and 5-of-16 (31.3 percent) inside the arc. Milwaukee had no such struggles, shooting above 54 percent in each half and shooting 7-of-15 from three. Gholston was 4-of-7 from deep and Jasin Sinani tallied 10 for the Panthers on a perfect 4-of-4 shooting night. Joey St. Pierre added eight points and 10 rebounds in the middle for the victors.
IUPUI will cap the regular season on Saturday (Feb. 26) when the Jaguars host Green Bay at 4:45 p.m. inside the Jungle. The Jaguars will honor the senior quartet of Maxwell, McClure,
Jonah Carrasco and
Bobby Harvey immediately before that contest.
