NASHVILLE - The IUPUI softball team split a pair of contests at the Roar City Invitational on Saturday (Feb. 19), defeating Miami (Ohio) 5-3 before falling to Bradley in the nightcap, 7-1.
Maicey Bedrick drove in four runs in the victory before the IUPUI offense was held to just two hits in game two.
Carly Metcalf earned her first win in the circle in a complete game victory.
"We brought good energy and fought hard all day," head coach Elisabeth Beirne said. "We kept fighting every pitch."
Game #1 - IUPUI 5, Miami (Ohio) 3
In game one, IUPUI overcame an early 2-0 deficit to rally past Miami (Ohio), 5-3. Bedrick went 2-of-3 with four runs batted in and
Jordan Barnes also provided a pair of hits. Metcalf went the distance, yielding three runs (no earned) and striking out two in the win.
Metcalf allowed a pair of unearned runs in the bottom of the first before Bedrick tied the score with a two-out, two-run triple in the second to tie the score. Miami retook the lead in the bottom of the third on a throwing error, but IUPUI answered in its next at-bat.
The Jaguars loaded the bases on a Barnes single, an
Abbey Haas walk and
Amber Pagan reached on an error. Bedrick continued her big game with a go-ahead, two-run double to left center. Later,
Morgan Gilbert drew a bases loaded walk to push across another run.
Metcalf worked out of trouble in the fifth and retired seven batters in order to close the game.
Game #2 - Bradley 7, IUPUI 1
Bradley jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the third when Olivia Bradley scampered home from third on a
Madison Bryant wild pitch.
IUPUI (2-6) tied the game in the bottom half when
Jaida Speth drilled a one-out single, but was erased on
Kasie Keyes' fielders choice. Keyes scored all the way from first when BU's left fielder misplayed a
Kendal Calvert ball for a three-base error. Gilbert followed by drawing a walk and stealing second, but Rachel Gregory grounded out to end the threat.
Bradley opened the floodgates in the fourth inning, taking advantage of an error to push across six unearned runs. Grace French struck the big blow with a bases clearing double and later scored on a wild pitch to make it 7-1.
Calvert got into scoring position in the sixth inning with a leadoff single and stolen base, but was ultimately left stranded as the Jaguars left three runners on base.
Bryant took the loss, working four innings, allowing four hits and fanning nine.
Jasmin Speth worked three scoreless innings in relief and punched out one.
IUPUI will cap their Nashville trip on Sunday when the Jaguars take on Miami (Ohio) at 2:00 p.m. and host Tennessee State at 4:30 p.m.
