ELON, NC – Despite recording 13 hits on the day, the IUPUI softball team lost two games on Saturday. The Jaguars dropped the first game against Elon, 4-2, then Appalachian State walked it off in the second game, 5-4.
IUPUI fell to Elon in the first game of the day, 4-2. Elon (2-0) scored two runs on one hit and a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the first inning to take the early lead. The Pheonix knocked in one more run in the bottom of the second inning to take a 3-0 lead.
With bases loaded in the top of the fourth inning,
Kendal Calvert singled up the middle to score
Hailey Pop and put the Jags on the board with two outs. Elon earned the last out and cleared the bases to end the fourth inning threat. With the game on the line in the top of the seventh inning,
Rachael Gregory knocked in
Morgan Gilbert to score the second run for the Jags but it wasn't enough as Elon got the final two outs and sealed the 4-2 win.
Jaida Speth went 2-for-3 and
Abbey Haas went 1-for-4 with a double.
Kendal Calvert and Gregory each recorded a hit and an RBI for the Jags.
Jordan Barnes and Pop each recorded hits in the loss. Carley Metcalf took the loss for IUPUI.
In game 2, the Jaguars lost in walk-off fashion after IUPUI tied the game at 4-4 in the top of the seventh inning but then Emily Parrot homered to center field to walk it off for the Mountaineers, 5-4.
Appalachian State (1-1) took an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning with a leadoff triple from Emma Jones and a sacrifice fly by Parrot. The Mountaineers tacked on three more runs with one run in the third, fourth and fifth innings to give them a 4-0 lead.
IUPUI fought back and cut the lead in half with two runs on three hits in the top of the sixth inning. Gilbert singled on a bunt to lead the inning off. With two outs,
Ashley Shelton hit an RBI single to third base to score Gilbert. Pop reached on a throwing error by the pitcher allowing Shelton to move to third.
Jaylin Calvert collected her first RBI of the season with a single to left field which scored Shelton.
An inning later the Jags took advantage of defensive miscues to tie the game at 4-4.
Kendal Calvert started the rally with a single up the middle followed by Gilbert reaching on a throwing error by the Mountaineers which allowed Kendal to score. With the tying run in scoring position Gregory hit an RBI groundout to right field to tie the game, but Appalachian State had the last at bat and defeated the Jags, 5-4.
Kendal Calvert, Gilbert, Barnes, Shelton,
Jaylin Calvert and
Jaida Speth all recorded hits in game two. Gregory, Shelton and J. Calvert each collected an RBI.
Madison Bryant struck out five batters but took the loss for IUPUI.
The Jaguars close out the opening weekend tomorrow morning at 9:30 AM when they face Saint Francis.
