MOON TOWNSHIP, Pa. - The IUPUI men's soccer team will look to keep the good times rolling on Wednesday (Nov. 2) when the Jaguars cap the regular season on the road at Robert Morris. The Jaguars are unbeaten in their last five contests and have won four-in-a-row in Horizon League play after opening the season 0-1-3 in league play. The Jaguars have already secured a place in the upcoming, six-team Horizon League Tournament, and enter the finale tied for second in the league standings with Wright State. IUPUI is vying for a potential first round bye as the No. 2 seed or the opportunity to host a first round game as either the No. 3 or No. 4 seed.
IUPUI (5-5-6, 4-1-3 HL) has outscored foes by a 10-4 margin over its past five games, going 4-0-1 in that span to climb back to .500 on the year. The most recent win was a 3-1 victory over Purdue Fort Wayne at Grand Park on Saturday as the Jaguars got goals from
Lukas Hackaa,
Tyler Gainer and
Josemir Gomez and junior
Lucas Morefield made a season-high eight stops. Gomez was later named Horizon League Offensive Player of the Week and now leads the league with nine goals scored.Â
The Jaguars' attack has been led by Gomez (9 goals, 3 assists), Hackaa (6 goals, 7 assists) and
Logan Finnegan (5 goals, 4 assists) as the trio has scored 20 of the team's 27 goals. Freshman
Ethan Vermillion is the only other IUPUI player with multiple goals, having tallied twice. Head coach
Sid van Druenen's squad continues to be led by newcomers all over the field as freshman midfielder
Kade Tepe leads the team in minutes played (1,265), followed closely by Hackaa (1,210).Â
Another newcomer,
Dominic Breidenbach, is third on the squad with 1,206 minutes.Â
In goal, Morefield has been brilliant of late, including his eight-save masterpiece against PFW. He's lowered his goals against average to 1.54 on the year while upping his save percentage to .744.Â
HORIZON LEAGUE STANDINGS
QUOTABLE
"It's super relieving and a happy feeling obviously. The weight of the game - we knew that if we win the game, we clinched a spot in the postseason. That was obviously our goal. We got up 1-0 at halftime, but I think it was Morefield that kept us in the game, honestly. PFW came out strong and had some good chances and we struggled with their initiative in the build. The second half, I think we were better and in control for 45 minutes. We're super happy and super relieved and know that we just extended our season," van Druenen said following his team's win over Purdue Fort Wayne on Saturday.Â
