WEST DES MOINES, Iowa - The IUPUI men's golf team put up scores of 300 and 305 and sits 14th after the opening day of the Zach Johnson Invitational at Glen Oaks Country Club on Monday (Sept. 27). Freshman
Sam McWilliams led the way with rounds of 74 and 73 and sits at 5-over 147 entering Tuesday's final round.
The tournament's final 18 will begin at 9:00 a.m. Central on Tuesday.Â
In the morning round, both McWilliams and redshirt freshman
Morgan Tournemire posted scores of 3-over 74 and freshman
Colten Girgis rounded out the rookie triumvirate with a 4-over 75. Sophomore
Taylor Gardner capped the scoring four with a 6-over 77 and
Brock Aten shot 9-over 80.Â
IUPUI finished the opening round strong as Girgis was 2-under on his final 10 holes and Gardner made eagle on his final hole to close at 77. McWilliams went birdie-birdie-par-par on his final four holes and Tournemire tossed in a late birdie as well.Â
Round two saw McWilliams lead the way at 2-over 73 and Gardner shot 4-over 75, including making birdie on three of his final four holes of the day. Tournemire had an eagle late in his second round to help him shoot 6-over 77 and Aten had a countable round of 80.Â
Girgis was unable to replicate his opening round success and carded a second round 81. Girgis and Gardner each had a team-high five birdies in the opening two rounds.Â
North Dakota State leads the field at 567 and Loyola-Chicago is second at 569. Southern Illinois' Matthis Besard is atop the leaderboard at 8-under 134 and he holds a two-shot lead on the remainder of the field. A full recap and results will be posted following Tuesday's final round.Â
