NORMAL, Ill. - Meghan Bernard and Samantha Hayward earned singles flight titles and the doubles tandem of Krystal Grubb and Ines Rivera won a doubles consolation championship as the women's tennis team spent three days at the Redbird Invitational in Normal, Ill. Bernard won the Flight #7 Singles title while Hayward advanced through the Flight #8 bracket. 

"Overall it was a very successful weekend - probably one of the best fall tournament results in recent history," head coach Jason Suscha said. "Everyone won at least one match and we came away with a 13-11 record in singles and two championships. More than that, we played very good tennis against quality competition and I think there was a sense of enjoyment and improvement.

"Meghan and Sammi both played very well in hot conditions and beat some quality players."

After Friday's win over an opponent from the University of Chicago, Bernard earned a spot in the finals with a 6-4, 2-6, 10-7 win over Marquette's Lara Kaiser. She then earned the title by defeating Valpo's Mia Bertino by a 7-6(4), 6-4 score. Hayward earned a win over a foe from Bradley in the quarters and then bested Chicago's Chloe Tsang in a marathon 6-4, 4-6, 14-12 victory on Saturday. She capped the tournament win with a 1-6, 6-2, 12-10, come-from-behind win over Katarina Dukic of Chicago State. 

Two other IUPUI players, Marta Krakowski and Rivera, both collected a pair of singles wins in Flight #9. Krakowski defeated opponents from Chicago State and Bradley to earn a third-place finish and Rivera knocked off opponents from Bradley and Chicago State over the weekend. 

Doubles play started slowly for the Jaguars, but Grubb and Rivera collected back-to-back wins over duos from Chicago State and Saint Louis to earn a second-place finish in the top flight. Gabrielle Ochalik and Christina Stankovic collected a pair of tough victories in Flight #4 as well. 

"Krystal and Ines going 2-1 in the A flight was pretty incredible as they had never played with each other before," Suscha said. "Christina and Gabi had a nice win over a quality team from Marquette."

A full list of IUPUI results is below. The Jaguars will return to action on Oct. 2 when they compete in the Butler Invitational in Indianapolis.
