MUNCIE, Ind. - Freshmen
Sam McWilliams and
Morgan Tournemire both carded an even par 70 and the IUPUI men's golf team put up a score of 293 as the Jaguars concluded play at Ball State's Earl Yestingsmeier Invitational at Delaware Country Club on Saturday (Sept. 18). The Jaguars climbed one spot in the standings, clearing Horizon League foe Northern Kentucky to finish 12th overall at 888 (292-303-293).
McWilliams was a par machine on Saturday, making 16, including 11 straight to round out his round. Tournemire made four birdies and four bogeys on the day and never fluctuated from more than one over or one under par. Sophomore
Kevin Tillery notched a 5-over 75 and freshman
Colten Girgis was countable at 77.
Matthew Baxter had his final round 78 discarded in the team scoring.
"The team showed some heart today to fight back after a tough finish yesterday. We are close to playing some really good golf," head coach
Jamie Broce said. "It was be good to get (Gardner) back in the lineup for next week as he has been our toughest competitor so far this fall.
"We're looking forward to a great week of practice and we have another great opportunity this next weekend at Drake. This team is very young and talented and we hope to see some real growth each week."
Sophomore
Taylor Gardner posted a final round 72 while playing as an individual. He started hot, getting to 3-under early in the round and playing his first nine in 32. However, his final nine was another story as he ultimately closed at 2-under.
Tournemire ultimately led IUPUI for the week, tying for 31st among the 81-player field at 217 (70-77-70) and Girgis tied for 42nd at 222 (73-72-77). McWilliams closed tied for 50th at 225 (75-80-70) and Baxter shot 230 (78-74-78) for the week.
Tillery was one shot back of Baxter at 231 (74-82-75). Gardner carded rounds of 71 and 72 after missing the tournament's opening round.
Wright State cruised to the team title by a whopping 38 strokes, carding a team score of 818. WSU's Cole Corder earned medalist honors by shooting 10-under 200 for the week.
IUPUI will return to action on Sept. 27-28 when the Jaguars compete in the Zach Johnson Invitational, hosted by Drake.
