MUNCIE, Ind. - A pair of freshmen -
Colten Girgis and
Morgan Tournemire - led the way for the IUPUI men's golf team on Friday (Sept. 17) on day one of Ball State's Earl Yestingsmeier Invitational at Delaware Country Club. Girgis ended his day at 5-over 145 after rounds of 73 and 72 and Tournemire closed at 8-over, carding an even par 70 in the morning, followed by a second round 78.
Horizon League foe Wright State leads the field at 20-under 540 while host Ball State is second at 561. IUPUI is looking up at the remainder of the field at 597 (292-305).
"In the first round, we hung in there and minimized the mistakes and just needed to capitalize on a few more putts," head coach
Jamie Broce said. "Round two, we lost focus and made mistakes and then we compounded them. Golf is a ton about momentum and we just got flat at the end of the round.
"We will bounce back tomorrow and get to learning more lessons during the week."
The morning round saw Tournemire make birdie on his final hole to get back to even par and shoot 70. After back-to-back bogeys to start the day, he worked back to even by making birdies on holes 11 and 14. Girgis shot 73, including two early birdies that got him to 1-under after three holes.
Sophomore
Kevin Tillery carded a 4-over 74 and freshman
Sam McWilliams rounded out the scoring four at 75.
Matthew Baxter shot 78 in round one as the team clocked in at 292 and was 12th heading into round two.
The Jaguars went the wrong direction after the break, carding a second round 303. Girgis paced the lineup with a 72 and Baxter shot 74, making five birdies in the second round. Tournemire posted a round of 77 and McWilliams had a countable 80. Tillery didn't fare much better, posting a second round score of 82.
Sophomore
Taylor Gardner played the second round as an individual and notched a 71, including finishing with back-to-back birdies. Collectively, IUPUI struggled to score, making just 20 birdies as a team on Friday. Baxter had a team-high seven birdies while the freshman trio of Girgis, McWilliams and Tournemire all tied with a team-high 21 pars.
Girgis is tied for 33rd overall at 145 and Tournemire is tied for 42nd among the 81-player field at 147.
The Jaguars will resume play on Saturday morning, teeing off at 9:30 a.m. off hole No. 10.
