WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The IUPUI men's golf team put up a second round 303 and climbed a spot on day two of the 2021 Horizon League Golf Championships at Kampen Golf Course on Monday (Apr. 26). Freshman
Taylor Gardner remained in third-place among the 50-player field, carding a 1-under 71 to move his score to 1-under 143 (72-71) for the week.
As a team, IUPUI is sixth overall at 612 (309-303) and just four shots back of Robert Morris. Oakland leads the field at 6-over 582 and Wright State is five strokes off the pace at 587. OU's Thomas Giroux is atop the player leaderboard at 4-under 140.
IUPUI started the day well, largely behind Gardner as the rookie got to 3-under through six holes to lead the run. The Jags then feasted on No. 10, making four birdies as Gardner,
Brock Aten,
Josh Yoder and
Keegan McCullough all made birdie. On No. 14, both Aten and McCullough made birdie from just off the green to keep some momentum. However, as the winds picked up late in the round, scoring became more difficult.
Gardner made five birdies on his 19th birthday to help notch round of 71.
"I'm kind of just grinding. My short game was really good," Gardner said. "I didn't hit a ton of greens, so my short game was pretty solid for the most part. I just kind of stuck in there.
"I've been missing in the right spots and if you miss in the right spots, most of the time you'll have a wedge in your hand. If you have a wedge in your hand, you can kind of attack pins from there. That's kind of been the gameplan for the most part."
Gardner leads the field in par-5 scoring at 5-under for the week and is also tied for the tournament's lead with eight birdies.
Behind him, McCullough had three birdies in his second round, 3-over 75 and Aten carded a second round 78.
Matthew Baxter posted a score of 79 and Yoder posted a second round 80. McCullough is tied for 16th overall at 151 (76-75).
The Jaguars rank second among the 10-team field in both par-3 and par-5 scoring, but have struggled on the par-4's. Collectively, IUPUI is 7-under on par-5's for the week.
IUPUI will tee off at 8:30 a.m. on Tuesday.
