WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - IUPUI freshman
Taylor Gardner posted an opening round, even par 72 at Kampen Golf Course to lead the Jaguars on day one of the Horizon League Championships on Sunday (Apr. 25). Gardner is currently tied for third overall among the 50-player field and was one of just six players to shoot par or better on Sunday.
As a team, IUPUI posted an opening day 309 and is seventh among the 10-team field heading into Monday's second round. Oakland leads the way after an opening round, even par 288 and Wright State is second at 4-over 292.
The Jaguars endured cold, windy conditions throughout and fought their way to a round of 309. Behind Gardner's 72, senior
Keegan McCullough carded a round of 4-over 76 and freshman
Josh Yoder had a round of 79. Freshman
Brock Aten rounded out the countable scores with an 82.
Gardner mixed three birdies, including a bunker chip-in, with three bogeys on the day. He played both the front and back nine even par and played his final seven holes of the day to 1-under. McCullough's lone birdie of the day came on the tournament's opening hole as he battled throughout, largely keeping big numbers off his card.
Yoder had three birdies on Sunday, which partly offset major troubles on hole Nos. 3 and 14. He was 1-over at the turn and finished the front nine with a stretch of three birdies in his final five holes. He topped the field by playing the par-3's to 1-under on Sunday.
Aten's lone birdie came on No. 4 and
Matthew Baxter one-upped him by making eagle on the 494-yard, par-5. Baxter's second shot from the rough left him a managable six-footer, which he buried to get back to even par.
As a team, IUPUI was second among the field in par-5 scoring at 6-under and tied for second in par-3 scoring, but limped on the par-4's. The Jaguars' 51 pars were fourth among the field, but their eight birdies tied for sixth overall. McCullough tied for third among the field with 13 pars on Sunday.
Individually, Oakland's Thomas Giroux and Wright State's Mikkel Mathiesen are tied atop the leaderboard at 2-under 70.
The Jaguars are slated to begin round two at 9:00 a.m. on Monday morning.
