KETTERING, Ohio - The IUPUI men's golf team is currently fifth of 12 teams at this week's Dayton Flyers Intercollegiate after carding rounds of 288 and 281 on Monday (Apr. 12). Freshman Brock Aten currently leads the Jags at even par 140 (73-67) and senior Keegan McCullough is just off his pace at 141 (74-67).

The Jags got acclimated to the conditions and cashed in during round two, posting a 1-over 281. Bowling Green leads the field at 3-under 557 and host Dayton is second at 1-under 559. "Today was a good step for the guys. We battled through tough conditions on the first 18 holes and posted a solid round with Gardner getting his first round under par," assistant coach Vince Drahman said. "The second 18 conditions got better and we played some good golf. (Aten) played great and (McCullough) had a strong finish.

"We're excited for tomorrow to have another chance to improve."

Freshman Taylor Gardner did the heavy lifting in round one, shooting 1-under 69 with four birdies in the morning. He was 3-under before closing with back-to-back bogeys to finish at 69. Matthew Baxter posted a 2-over 72 and Aten closed at 3-over 73. Keegan McCullough followed with a 4-over 74.

In round two, Aten and McCullough both went 3-under 67 to fuel the Jags' efforts. Aten made five birdies and an eagle on the par-4, No. 1. McCullough notched six birdies against three bogeys for his 67. Baxter checked in with a second consecutive 2-over 70 and Gardner had a countable 5-over 75.

Freshman Kevin Tillery had scores of 77 and 76 on Monday.

Aten is tied for eighth overall while McCullough is tied for tenth.

"The team played well today and we made good strides," Aten said. "I hit it well most of the day. The second round I was getting scooby pretty much the whole second round.

"The team is making good strides this week."

IUPUI will begin play on No. 8 on Tuesday, beginning at 9:00 a.m.
