SOFTBALL WINS NINE-INNING THRILLER, 2-1, OVER BELLARMINE

Lexi Lucas threw a complete game gem to propel IUPUI to its first win of the season.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – IUPUI softball earned its first win of the season with a thrilling 2-1 win in nine innings against Bellarmine on Friday (March 5).

Using the international tiebreak rule, the eighth inning started with a runner on second. Both IUPUI (1-5) and Bellarmine (2-4) got the runner to third with one out but both teams failed to get the runner across, sending the game to the ninth.

To start the ninth, Jaida Speth was placed on second and moved over on a sacrifice bunt by Morgan Gilbert. Abbey Haas stepped to the plate as a pinch hitter and on the second pitch the freshman saw, Haas hit a line drive under the third baseman's glove to bring home the go-ahead run.

Lexi Lucas then took the circle to try to close out the win. With the tying run on second, Lucas got a flyout to center that was not deep enough to move the runner over. Bellarmine then tried to lay down a bunt but it was snagged in the air by a charging Hailey Pop for the second out. Down to the final out, Lucas got a foul out to Pop to end the game.

The game started out slow as both pitchers were in control. IUPUI was held hitless for the first three innings and Bellarmine stranded a runner in the first after reaching on a fielding error. A single and a walk in the third put two runners on for the Knights with one out but Lucas buckled down and got two groundouts to end the threat.

Gilbert then started IUPUI's fourth inning with a single and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt from Lauren Youngblood. Rachael Gregory singled and moved Gilbert to third to put the first run of the game 60 feet away. Jordan Barnes fly ball to left field in the next at bat was deep enough to score Gilbert, giving IUPUI a 1-0 lead.

After two more scoreless innings, Bellarmine got back in to the game, taking advantage of a Lucas walk to start the sixth inning. After two fly outs, a steal of second was followed by a double to center that tied the game at one. Lucas got a flyout in the next at bat to keep the game tied.

In the pitchers' duel, Lucas threw 105 pitches in the complete game win, allowing just two hits for Bellarmine. Lucas struck out three batters and left seven runners on base for the Knights.
