INDIANAPOLIS – IUPUI split a pair of games against Green Bay on Tuesday (March 23). The Jags dropped the first game with the Phoenix 3-2, before earning a win in the second game 6-4.
GAME 1: Green Bay 3, IUPUI 2
The first game of the day was a pitcher's duel between IUPUI's
Lexi Lucas and Green Bay's Kayla Schwebke with Schwebke getting the upper hand in the matchup.
IUPUI had early chances against Green Bay getting the first two batters of the game on but three-straight outs ended the first threat for the Jags. In the second a one-out walk and single was followed by another infield popup before
Morgan Gilbert walked to load the bases.
Lauren Youngblood struck out swinging to end the inning.
In the third, IUPUI finally broke through.
Jennah Speth walked to start the inning and
Jordan Barnes was hit by a pitch. A sacrifice bunt by
Kasie Keyes moved the runners over and with two outs,
Hailey Pop delivered a single up the middle to bring home both Speth and
Ryleigh Marsh, who pinch ran for Barnes, to put the Jags up 2-0.
After only giving up one double through the first three innings, Green Bay finally got to Lucas. After Lucas got a ground out to start the inning, a single and hit batter was capitalized with a three-run home run to center to put the Phoenix on top 3-2.
Lucas got out of the inning and only allowed a single over the next two frames, leaving IUPUI down one going in to the bottom of the sixth.
Rachael Gregory walked to lead off the inning before a pop out and fielder's choice left the Jags with a runner on first and two outs. A walk by
Maicey Bedrick put the tying run on second but a ground out by Gilbert ended the inning.
Green Bay put runners on second and third with one out but Lucas kept the deficit at one after getting to fly outs but the Jags went three-up, three-down in the bottom of the seventh to end the inning.
GAME 2: IUPUI 6, Green Bay 4
A big blast by
Maicey Bedrick helped IUPUI to a split on the day with Green Bay as the sophomore hit her first home run of the season in the second inning. After Barnes singled to start the inning, two batters later,
Abbey Haas earned a one-out walk. On the second pitch of the at bat, after fouling off a bunt, Bedrick hit a rope over the left field wall to put the Jags up 3-0.
In the third, IUPUI added to its lead after
Lauren Youngblood singled and stole both second and third. Youngblood then scored the fourth run of the game for the Jags on a sacrifice fly by
Jordan Barnes.
Jennah Speth, who had walked before Barnes' at bat, scored after Pop singled to left, making the lead 5-0.
Green Bay cut the lead to two with three runs in the top of the fourth but the Jags added another run in the bottom of the fifth. Another Barnes single brought home Youngblood, who was hit by a pitch earlier in the inning.
The Phoenix tried to come back in the seventh with a two-out single and another single in the next at bat that scored the runner but IUPUI's defense caught Green Bay's batter trying to stretch the play to third for the final out of the game.
Jennah Speth picked up the win for IUPUI, moving her record to 4-5 on the season, going seven innings, allowing four runs and striking out two batters.
