JAGUARS FALL IN DOUBLEHEADER TO YOUNGSTOWN STATE

Both Jennah Speth and Jordan Barnes homered for IUPUI

INDIANAPOLIS – The day featured a slugfest and a pitching duel but IUPUI fell on the wrong side of both as the Jags lost to Youngstown State in two games on Friday (April 2).

The first game of the day was a 12-7 win by Youngstown State before the Jags lost game two 3-0.

YOUNGSTOWN STATE 12 – IUPUI 7
Jennah Speth and Jordan Barnes both went deep for IUPUI in the first game of the day but the offense could not keep up as Youngstown State took game one 12-7. The Jags finished with five hits in the game with Barnes collecting two.

Youngstown State jumped on IUPUI starter Lexi Lucas with back-to-back solo home runs to start the game. The Jags responded in the bottom of the inning with a two-run home run from Speth.

In the third inning, IUPUI jumped ahead with a double from Maicey Bedrick to score Lauren Youngblood, who reached on an error to start the inning. Rachael Gregory delivered a two-RBI single to score Ryleigh Marsh and Bedrick.

A big inning doomed IUPUI in the game as Youngstown State scored nine runs in the top of the fifth. A solo shot led off the inning. The big shot came with a grand slam with one out to put the Penguins up 8-5 and two batters later, a two-run home run made the score 10-5. The ninth run of the inning came off of a bases loaded walk.

Bedrick scored Youngblood in the bottom of the inning with a sac fly and Barnes homered in the bottom of the seventh but the Jags could not pull together a late rally.

YOUNGSTOWN STATE 3 – IUPUI 0
The first game featured 20 hits between the two teams but the second saw just seven as IUPUI fell 3-0 to Youngstown State.

Jennah Speth and Jordan Barnes collected the only two hits for IUPUI and Speth had a solid outing allowing just three runs on five hits but the Jags could not get anything going off of Youngstown State starter Elle Buffenbarger.

Avrey Schumacher did the damage for Youngstown State, hitting two home runs. Schumacher hit a solo shot in the fourth inning to break a scoreless tie before hitting a two-run home run in the sixth to extend IUPUI's deficit.

IUPUI only managed one base runner in the first five innings, getting the runner to second after stolen base.

In the sixth, Rachael Gregory led off with a walk and moved to second on a passed ball but a foul out and a strikeout ended the threat.

Down 3-0 and facing its final three outs, Speth singled but the Jags could not move her any further than first as Youngstown State closed it out with three-straight outs.
